Purdue Calumet Season Preview; Peregrines Open 2015-16 Thursday on the Road
The Purdue University Calumet men’s basketball team will look to build upon its solid campaign from a year ago when the Peregrines kick off the 2015-16 campaign Thursday at Great Lakes Christian College (Mich).

The Peregrines (0-0) will take on the Lakes (0-1) starting at 6:00 p.m. CT in Lansing, Michigan.

“With a strong nucleus of return players, we are very excited for the upcoming season,” eighth-year head coach Dan Voudrie said of his squad, which features seven returners. “We are very pleased with the additions to our team, which are going to fill the voids from last year’s ball club.”

SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS
Following Thursday’s opening game with the Lakes, the Peregrines will take on Governors State and Clarke University at Purdue Calumet’s annual Tip-Off Classic Nov. 6-7 at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

The Black and Gold will then travel to Winona Lake, Ind., for the Grace College Tournament Nov. 13-14. Along with their 21 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contests, the Peregrines will travel to Chicago, Ill., to face NCAA Division I opponent University of Illinois-Chicago in an exhibition contest Dec. 22 at the UIC Pavilion.

Purdue Calumet will play a 14-game home schedule, a year removed from going 11-6 inside the friendly confines of the Fitness and Recreation Center. Those 11 home victories were highlighted by a 74-71 win over then-15th-ranked and eventual league co-champion St. Francis (Ill.).

RETURNING PLAYERS
The Peregrines return seven players from last year’s squad, including 6-foot-8 senior forward Ryan Rader (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook), who ranked third on the team with 12.7 points per game and 18th in NAIA Div. 2 with a 57.7 field goal percentage. Rader also ranked in the Top 50 averaging 5.1 defensive rebounds per game and 7.2 total rebounds per contest. Junior big man Danny Paschen (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) also returns to the Black and Gold this season, after ranking 25th in NAIA Div.2 with 8.2 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7 forward also ranked 27th in offensive rebounds per game (2.9), 33rd in total rebounds (246) and 45th in defensive rebounds per game (5.2).

“Danny has been a top rebounder in the league and will be a great presence in our frontcourt,” Voudrie said of the junior swingman.

Also returning is 6-foot-10 center Andis Malahovskis (Cesis, Latvia/Cesis City) and 6-foot-7 center Ryan Hensen (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler).

“With the majority of our height returning this season, I feel like we have one of the biggest frontcourts in the NAIA,” said Voudrie.

Along with the four big men returning to this year’s team, the Black and Gold also bring back senior guard Dayvohn Braxton (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), who averaged 3.7 points per game and started 22 games as a junior. Junior guards Jason Higgins (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and Darric Obinger's (Munster, Ind./Calumet Christian) also return to add threats from behind the arc. Obinger notched 4.4 points per game and ranked first on the team in three-point field goal percentage (37.9) as a sophomore.

KEY ADDITIONS
The Black and Gold bring in five freshman along with three transfer students to help round out the Peregrines lineup.

LaBradford Sebree (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) enters his first season with the Peregrines after two seasons with Lake Michigan College, where he averaged 19.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting at a 46.7 percent clip from the field in his second season with the Red Hawks.

“LaBradford joins us after a runner-up MCCAA conference player of the year performance, and we look forward to having him on the court this year,” Voudrie said.

Other transfer players include Marquette Muhammad (Chicago, Ill./Crete Monee) and Daulton Albanese (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) who will look to make an immediate impact. Muhammad comes to Purdue Calumet after two seasons at Richard J. Daley College, where he averaged 18.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He was also named to the NJCAA Region 4 All-Region Second Team while leading the city colleges of Chicago in scoring and steals.

Freshman Chandler Spring (Covington, Ind./Covington) enters his first season with the Peregrines after garnering three-straight all-conference honors including All-State accolades during his senior campaign at Covington High. Freshmen Ronald Karenzi (Kampala, Uganda/Rock Creek), Max Clifford (Franklin, Ind./Roncalli) and Will Brown (Sellersburg, Ind./ Rock Creek) will look to add quality minutes while freshman guard Jordan Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) will sit out the year due to injury with a redshirt.
