Purdue Calumet falls to Roosevelt, 4-0
The Purdue University Calumet women’s soccer team sustained a 4-0 conference loss to visiting Roosevelt University Saturday at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.
Roosevelt (6-8, 3-6 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) go two goals from Delany Barrett – the first to start off scoring in the 8th minute – to lead the Lakers, who took a 3-0 lead at half.
Brenna Stremlau recorded the games’ second goal in the 18th and Chelsea Olson added another just before the break, in the 44th.
The Lakers held a 23-13 shot advantage on the Peregrines (1-12-1, 0-8), and also led the corner kick numbers at 9-3.
Purdue Calumet freshman keeper Kelley Sharp (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) recorded a career-high 12 saves in the match in all 90 minutes, while classmates Shelby Ross (Columbus Ind./Columbus North) and Brianna Leggett (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) led the offense, with four and three shots, respectively.
Kara Jones picked up the shutout win for the Lakers, stopping eight shots.
Purdue Calumet returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 21, when the Peregrines travel to Davenport, Iowa, for a CCAC road matchup at St. Ambrose University.
Purdue Calumet Falls to Roosevelt in Double-Overtime Thriller, 2-1
The Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team fell to Roosevelt University, 2-1, in a double-overtime thriller Saturday afternoon at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.
The Peregrines (10-2-1, 6-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) evened the match up at 1-1 late in the second half, but the Lakers (10-3-2, 8-0-1 CCAC) would record the game-winning goal in the opening minute of double overtime to pick up the win in a battle of the CCAC’s top two teams.
Both teams are currently receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
A red card in the first half left Roosevelt short for the majority of the match, but the Lakers would strike first in the 47th minute on a goal by Omar Guzman to give the Lakers an early 1-0 advantage after both teams entered halftime tied in a scoreless draw.
Offensive pressure for the remainder of the half by the Peregrines would help Carlos Ramirez (El Paso, Texas/Coronado) find the back of the net in the 83rd minute, on a pass from Zac Doepke (Troy, Mich./Troy) to even the match, 1-1.
In the last five minutes of regulation, the Lakers had a scoring opportunity at point blank range, but Peregrines’ sophomore keeoer Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista) would make a spectacular sliding save in front of the goal to keep the match tied heading in to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Roosevelt’s Evan Trychta broke free and chipped a shot in the upper left 90 that found he back of the net just 30 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Lakers to the win.
The Peregrines outshot the Lakers 17-9 — nine of them on goal — as Ramirez and Andres Ayala (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) each finished with four each and Papa Otoo (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) recorded three.
David finished the match with two saves, while Roosevelt’s Jesus Velasco recorded a match-high eight saves for the Lakers, who remained in first place in the conference standings with the victory.
Purdue Calumet returns to action Tues. Oct. 20 as the Peregrines travel to Davenport, Iowa, to face CCAC opponent St. Ambrose University at 2:00 p.m. CT.
