Alex Cordova Sets Another School Record to Lead Peregrine Men at Bethel
Alex Cordova set a new career best and re-broke the Purdue University Calumet men’s cross country 8-kilometer record in the process, as the junior led the way for the Peregrines at Friday’s Bethel Pilot Invitational at Saint Patrick’s County Park.

Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) ran a time of 26 minutes, 20 seconds, to break his previous season-best of 26:22 and edge his personal career mark by one second. The time gave him a spot in the Top 10 at 10th overall in the field of 167 to mark his fourth top 10 finish this season for the Peregrines, who placed 12th out of 14 teams Friday.

In total, Purdue Calumet had eight runners break the 30-minute mark and five set personal career bests. Sophomore Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) set a season PR with his time of 27:18 (47th) and teammate Justin Peterson (Grant Park, Ill.) set a 13-second personal-best at 28:29 (92nd). Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) was the next Peregrine finisher with a time of 28:39 (92nd) and freshman Matt Mathias (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) broke his previous career-best by 36 seconds to place 121st (29:42) and round out the Peregrines’ scoring.

Also setting season bests for the Peregrines were Jordan Posthauer (Lafayette, Ind./Fountain Central) at 29:48 (127th) and Artuto Ruiz (Hammond, Ind./Clark) at 29:50 (128th).

Purdue Calumet returns to action Sat. Oct. 24 when the Peregrines travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., for the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College.

Purdue Calumet Continues to Drop Times at Friday's Bethel Invite
The Purdue University Calumet women’s cross country team continued its improvement this season with another strong outing, this time at Friday’s Bethel Pilot Invitational at St. Patrick’s County Park.

For the second-straight meet, the Peregrines had six runners set personal-bests, led by freshman Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), who ran a team-best time of 20 minutes, 43 seconds, to shave 29 seconds of her previous best and place 81st in the field of 170.

Christine Lewandowski (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll) set another personal record of her own, dropping 34 seconds off her previous best with Friday’s 22:04 (117th).

Megan Gliva (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was the next Peregrine finisher with a time of 22:51 (PR by 28 seconds); Georgina Diaz (Hammond, Ind./Hammond) dropped nearly a minute off her previous best with a 22:54 (128th) and Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) shaved 20 seconds with a time of 22:55 (130th).

Rounding out the Peregrines’ scoring was Sara Kubas (Orland Hill, Ill./Andrew) with a 23:37 (137th) and Alejandra Garcia (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) cut another 45 seconds off her previous best with a 26:08 (160th).

The Peregrines placed 15th in the 17-team meet, which saw Taylor take the title with 24 points.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24, when Purdue Calumet travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., to compete in the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College.

Purdue Calumet Falls in Close Match to Judson, 1-0
The Purdue University Calumet women’s soccer team was able to hold visiting Judson University to just one score but couldn’t muster on of its own in a tight 1-0 conference loss Saturday at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

The Eagles (5-7, 4-4 Chicagoland College Athletic Conference) struck in the just 4th minute of play when Hannah Larsen chipped in an unassisted goal just under the cross bar from just inside the 18-yard box.

Purdue Calumet (1-10-1, 0-6 CCAC) had several scoring chances the rest of the half, as Brianna Leggett (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) had a point-blank shot hit the post at 32’ and Kami Graber (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) headed a cross that just missed high early, in the 22nd minute.

Larsen’s goal proved to only scoring left in the tank for either team, however, as Peregrine freshman keeper Kelley Sharp (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) kept the Eagles off the board the rest of the way, finishing the game with eight saves.

Judson just edged Purdue Calumet in shots, 13-11, and had two more corner kicks, at 4-2. Graber led the Peregrines with four shots and freshman Shayna Coy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) had three.

Eloisa Borreguero picked up the win in goal for Judson, stopping three shots.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 13, when the Peregrines travel to Milwaukie, Wis., for a CCAC matchup at Cardinal Stritch.

Purdue Calumet Falls at Calumet College, 8-1
The Purdue University Calumet men’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 conference contest at Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday in the Peregrines’ first action of 2015-16.

Sophomore James Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Oak Forest) picked up the lone Purdue Calumet victory of the day, sweeping the Crimson Wave’s Erwin Krackow in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Jayson Savich (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) had a fighting chance to capture his first collegiate victory at No. 4 singles, battling CCSJ’s Cristian Baez to a back-and-forth first set, 7-6, before Saez won the tiebreaker and went on to win Set 2, 6-0.

Delmer Fleming (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) and Savich also put up a battle at No. 2 doubles before falling to CCSJ’s Krackow and Baez, 8-6.

Purdue Calumet (0-1) completes its fall season with the match and will return to championship season play in the spring.

Purdue Calumet Battles at Taylor, Drops Two Nonconference Matches
The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team dropped a pair of nonleague matches at the Taylor University Tri-Match Saturday, falling in three sets to the host Trojans and St. Catharine (Ky.) College at Odle Arena.

The Peregrines (6-17) first fell to the host Trojans (10-11), 25-15, 25-18, 25-23, then dropped the second match to St. Catharine (19-8), 25-23, 25-17, 25-20.

Despite Purdue Calumet’s struggles offensively, junior Kenyatta Scales (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) proved to be a bright spot defensively, as she recorded double-digit dig performances in both matches, including a career-high 11 digs in the loss to St. Catharine.

Scales finished with a team-best 21 digs on the afternoon.

Offensively, senior Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township) led the way, recording eight kills and five service aces to open the day against Taylor, followed by six kills and a team-high .278 attack percentage versus St. Catharine. Freshman Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) had a strong outing against St. Catharine, finshing with six kills and a .238 attack percentage and sophomore teammate Carissa Jones (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) added five kills in that setback.

Sophomore Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) added 11 digs and four kills against Taylor and sophomore setter Carley Bartolini (Portage, Ind./Chesterton) finished both games with a combined 49 assists (21 against Taylor and 28 against St. Catharine).

“Our team battling hard against two teams that were receiving votes in the Top 25 (earlier this season) makes us a better volleyball team,” Assistant Coach Cory Sackett said. “Today was one of our best days of volleyball all season.”

Purdue Calumet returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 13, when the Peregrines return home to the Fitness and Recreation Center to host Indiana Northwest for a 7 p.m. non conference matchup with the RedHawks. Tuesday is also Kids Day, as Purdue Calumet offers free admission to all children under age 18 and will have a free autograph poster session with the Peregrines’ players immediately following the contest.

Purdue Calumet Remains Unbeaten at Home with 3-1 Win Over Judson
The Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team used a pair of first half goals to gain control early, before scoring a third in the second half to defeat Judson University 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

The Peregrines (9-1-1, 5-1 CCAC) defeated the Eagles (3-8-1, 2-5 CCAC) for the first time since the program was reinstated in 2012.

“Offensively we were the sharpest we’ve looked in the mid field and the attacking third,” first-year head coach Ryan Hayes said. “The way we controlled the game tempo was very good.”

Senior forward Papa Otoo (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River) recorded his first two goals of the season in the first 11 minutes of the match, thanks to a pair of assists by Tulio Ribeiro (Itajuba, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coracao de Jesus) to give the Black and Gold the early 2-0 advantage.

Purdue Calumet would continue their offensive attack for the first half, out-shooting the Eagles 7-2, heading in to the break with a 2-0 lead.

The Peregrines would record their third goal midway through the second half, after a pass from JP Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) found Ribeiro in front of the box who found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Breyden Anderson recorded the lone goal for Judson in the 83rd minute, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles as Purdue Calumet continued their unbeaten streak at Pepsi Field, with a 3-1 victory.

Sophomore keeper Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista) registered a pair of saves in 79 minutes to pick up his sixth win of the season.

The Peregrines will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 12, as they travel to Milwaukee, Wisc. to take on Cardinal Stritch University at 2:00 p.m. CT.

Six Purdue Calumet Players Named to NFCA Scholar-Team
The Purdue University Calumet softball program had six members of last year’s 2014-15 squad were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete honors earlier this week.

“These student-athletes show that our players embrace success on the field and in the classroom,” head coach Heather Tarter said.

“I am very proud of their accomplishments and how they have represented our program. They have set a strong example of what Peregrine Softball is about for our entire program.”

The following players from the 2014-15 Peregrine team were named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. The NFCA announced 5,493 softball players across seven membership divisions earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Peregrines concluded their first season as an eligible conference member in 2015 with a 25-23 overall mark and two upsets – marking their first two postseason wins in program history – in last season's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. No. 6-seeded Purdue Calumet opened postseason play with a 5-0 shutout over No. 3 seed Judson, before bouncing back from a loss to Olivet Nazarene with a 1-0 shutout win over #4 seed Calumet College of St. Joseph.

The Peregrines open the 2016 season Feb. 19 in St. Catharine, Ky., as they face St. Catharine College to jump start the 2015-16 campaign.
