Despite taking an early lead in Game 1, the Purdue University Calumet softball team fell in the opener of Tuesday's league doubleheader at Roosevelt University, 8-6, before falling in the nightcap 10-2.

The Peregrines (21-25, 10-11 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) recorded eight hits in game one, led by 2-for-3 performances with a double and RBI by teammates Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield) and Katilin Barajas (Dyer, Ind./Andrean).

GAME 1: ROOSEVELT 8, PURDUE CALUMET 6
Purdue Calumet jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Lakers (11-30, 7-12) answered with runs in the first, second, and a three-run outburst in the third to take a permanent lead.

Allyson Leach (Demotte, Ind./North Newton) kicked off the scoring in the first with an RBI hit up the middle to score Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster), who opend the game with a leadoff triple to left field. Barajas would then reach on a fielding error, allowing Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) and Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) to score on the play and put the Peregrines up, 3-0.

After the Lakers answered with single-run innings in the bottom of the first and the second, Purdue Calumet would answer with a score in the top of the third on a Jess Loy (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) fielder's choice RBI that plated Oppenhuis, who singled, to give the Peregrines' a 4-2 lead. But Roosevelt exploded for three scores in the third, using four hits to take a 5-4 lead midway through the contest.

RU would get two more in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, but the Peregrines didn't quit, scoring two more runs in the fifth when Steffens and Barajas belted back-to-back RBI doubles to give Purdue Calumet new life and cut the lead to one, at 7-6.

The Lakers, however, would add an insurance run in the sixth and then escape in the top of the seventh, despite Purdue Calumet getting two runners to second and third with one out, but both runners were stranded to end the game.

Roosevelt starter Morgan Vogt got the win, scattering eight hits and giving up four earned runs to go along with three strikeouts.

Leach would score later in the inning for the Black and Gold to make the score 6-2.

The Lakers would answer the Peregrines come back efforts and score four more runs in the next three innings to come away with the 10-2 win.
