Patrick Mudd’s 78 led the way for the Purdue University Calumet men’s golf team on Day 1 of the Bethel Pilot Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club Friday.

The Peregrines shot a team score of 322 to stand seventh overall out of 11 teams.

With his 6-over-par, Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) stood tied for 12th in the individual standings. Freshman teammate Leo Govert (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) wasn’t far behind, as he carded a season-low 80 to stand tied for 21st overall out of the field of 56.

Freshman Ryan Wells (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) was next with a 81 (tied for 29th) and senior Tim Talley (Portage, Ind./Portage) scored a 83 (tied for 39th).

Sophomore Joshua Jackowski (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) rounded out the Peregrines with a 86, which tied for 44th.

Taylor University led the field in Round 1, scoring a 299, followed by Holy Cross (305), and Grace College (308). HCC’s Kaleb Gorbahn stood in medalist position with a par 72.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday at 9 a.m. CT to complete play in the two-day tournament.

Peregrine Baseball Drops DH to St. Francis Saturday Afternoon
The Purdue University Calumet baseball team dropped two games to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday afternoon with scores of 5-2 and 6-3.

Senior John Cristo (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Peregrines (12-14, 7-10) at the plate going 3-for-5 with two walks and one RBI in both games while Cody Dykema (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) finished 3-for-7 at the plate with one RBI.

The Peregrines return to action tomorrow, April 17, when they travel to Joliet, Ill. to finish the three-game series with St. Francis. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT).

Game 1: St. Francis (Ill.) 5, Peregrines 2
The Fighting Saints (23-22, 8-13) took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning, after back-to-back RBI-singles from Nick Fleischauer and Rick Faron gave USF the first lead of the game.

St. Francis would tack on two more runs in the top of the second inning, thanks to a 2-RBI double from Zach Barkdull making it 4-0.

Purdue Calumet would get one back in the bottom half of the fourth, after Cristo roped a single in to centerfield to score Andrew Atchison (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) making it 4-1.

After the Fighting Saints collected another run in the top of the fifth, Dykema would connect on an RBI-single plating Luke Schmidt (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South), which was the last run score by both teams as USF came away with the 5-2 victory.

Sophomore Willie Bennett (Santee, Calif./West Hills) suffered the loss for the Peregrines, after throwing a complete game and giving up three earned runs.

Kevin Mampe also pitched a complete game for the Fighting Saints, earning the win with only two runs allowed while striking out five.

Game 2: St. Francis (Ill.) 6, Peregrines 3
Saint Francis would take an early 1-0 lead to start off Game 2, and continue to add runs in the later innings while taking a 6-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh.

Purdue Calumet would score their first run of the game in the seventh frame thanks to an RBI-single from Jonny Albers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) which plated Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) making it 6-1.

The Peregrines would string some hits together and capitalize on some defensive miscues from the Fighting Saints, scoring a pair of runs cutting their deficit to 6-3.

Harris would reach on an error which plated Cody Moskovsky (St. John, Ind./Bishop Noll), followed by an RBI-single fromAlec Skalka (Munster, Ind./Munster) that scored Harris.

Saint Francis would hold the Black and Gold scoreless for the rest of the game and come away with the 6-3 win.

Phil Madvek (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) suffered the loss for Purdue Calumet after giving up six runs, just two earned, in nine innings of work while striking out four.​

Purdue Calumet Wins Game 1 in Walk-Off Fashion; Drops Nightcap to CCSJ
The Purdue University Calumet softball team returned to its walk-off ways with a thrilling Game 1 win before falling in Saturday’s nightcap in a league split with visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph.

The Peregrines (17-18, 6-4 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) won the opener, 7-6, on Alex Morales’ (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) walk-off, line-drive single in the bottom of the seventh, before falling in a nine-inning marathon in Game 2, 4-3.

Sophomore Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) had a day at the plate for Purdue Calumet, finishing 5-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI across both games. Freshman reliever Sydney Schmitt (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) was credited with the Game 1 victory over the Crimson Wave (22-12, 10-2 CCAC).

The Peregrines return to action with a league doubleheader at St. Ambrose (Iowa). Game 1 begins at 1 p.m. CT in Davenport, Iowa.

GAME 1: PURDUE CALUMET 7, CALUMET COLLEGE 6
Morales’ walk-off hit proved to be the game-winner, but the Peregrines needed several others to step up in the bottom of the seventh trailing by two runs.

With CCSJ leading, 6-4, heading into the final frame, Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) started things off by getting on base via a Crimson Wave error. Emily Cole (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North), pinch running for Barajas, would then score as Holly Pagan capped a big Game 1 with a RBI double to right center to bring the Peregrines within one.

After a Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third, junior Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) came up big in a pinch-hitting position with an RBI-single up the middle to tie the game at 6-all. Teammate Allyson Leach (Demotte, Ind./North Newton) kept the inning alive with a single through the left side, setting up Morales, who connected with a shot to right center with two outs to lift the Peregrines to a thrilling victory.

Barajas and Pagan opened Purdue Calumet’s scoring in the first on back-to-back RBI hits to take a 2-1 lead after CCSJ scored in the top of the inning on Patty Monarrez’s RBI double to left center.

Purdue Calumet would get another run in the second on a Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield) RBI-single to make the score 3-2, after a Elizabeth Fuller double scored another run for the Crimson Wave. The Peregrines would add on another score on an error in the third, but a Monarrez three-run home run in the sixth gave the lead back to CCSJ, 6-4.

Pagan finished Game 1 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, two doubles and a run scored, freshman Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run, and Steffens, Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and Leach each finished with two hits.

Schmitt pitched an inning and third to get the win in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.

GAME 2: CALUMET COLLEGE 4, PURDUE CALUMET 3
The Peregrines had a chance to walk away with a sweep up 3-2 in the top of the seventh, but the Crimson Wave tied the game up on a Priscilla Aponte RBI-double to send it to extra innings.

CCSJ would go to score the game-winner in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk by Samantha Lopez.

Purdue Calumet took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of first inning when Samantha Oppenhuis singled up the middle to complete a three-run frame. Holly Pagan looped a two-run single down the right-field line to plate Olivia Sardella (single) and Alex Morales (walk) to tie the game at 2-all after CCSJ opened the game with two runs in the top of the frame, as Elizabeth Fuller’s single to second base scored two with the bases loaded.

The game would go scoreless until the seventh, when the Crimson Wave plated the game-tying run to send the contest into extra innings.

Pagan finished Game 2 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, Taylor Kotzo was 2-for-4 and pinch-hitter Dri Tashijan (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) made the most of her seventh-inning appearance with a single.

Pagan took the loss in the circle, scattering nine hits and striking out three.

CCSJ starter Kali Weyer got the win, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, striking out two and walking one.

Delmer Fleming Picks Up Singles Victory in Purdue Calumet Loss to USF
The Purdue University Calumet men's tennis team fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Francis (Ill.), 8-1, Saturday at Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Delmer Fleming (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) won in No. 5 singles in three sets, losing the first set 4-6, then fought back and won the last two sets, 6-0, 13-11, over USF's David Kohler to pick up the Peregrines' first point of the spring season.

Fleming and No. 1 doubles partner Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won a point but ended up sustaining a 8-1 setback to the USF pair of Boris Peshev and Lucas Randall.

Will Harber (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan) won a point in each set, but fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and senior Fernando Pina (Hammond, Ind./Hammond) his first two points of the season in a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Fritz Ticala at No. 6 singles.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Sunday for a double event as the Peregrines host CCAC rival Calumet St. Joseph starting 9 a.m. (CT) then will face CCAC foe St. Ambrose (Iowa) starting at 2 p.m. at Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

Senior Lori Haas (Bismarck, Ill./Bismarck-Henning) won in No. 1 singles against USF's Danielle Hoffman, 7-5, 6-3.

Freshman Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) also won for Peregrines in No. 6 singles against USF's Katie Monahan, 6-3, 6-2.

Haas and Ashley Pabey (East Chicago, Ind./East Chicago) were able to win 2 games in No. 1 doubles before falling 8-2 to USF's Eva Lopez and Hoffman.

Wells Leads Purdue Calumet Men at Bethel Pilot Invite
Freshman Ryan Wells carded a two-day score of 159 to lead the way for the Purdue University Calumet men’s golf team in the Peregrines’ ninth-place finish at the Bethel Pilot Invitational Saturday.

Wells (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) improved three strokes from his Day 1 score to record a 78 in Saturday’s final round. His 159 was good for tied for 20th in the individual standings.

The Peregrines shot a two-day score of 644, recording identical round scores of 322 each day at Blackthorn Golf Club.

Senior Tim Talley (Portage, Ind./Portage) finished second for the Peregrines, carding a two-day score of 161 (tied for 26th) after Saturday’s 78, which knocked five strokes off his Friday score.

Freshman Leo Govert (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was next, shooting an 82 Saturday for a 36-hole round of 162, good for tied for 29th place.

Joshua Jackowski (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central)) finished out Purdue Calumet’s two-round scoring, carding a 84 Saturday to shoot a 170 (44th).

Taylor University took the team title with a final score of 595, followed by second-place Holy Cross (608) and third-place Grace College (615) in the 11-team tournament.

Taylor’s Mitch Lamping won medalist honors, carding a two-day score of 145.

The Peregrines return to action Friday, April 22, for the first day of the Huntington Invitational in Lebanon, Ind.

Peregrine Baseball Picks up 6-4 Victory Over St. Francis Sunday
The Purdue University Calumet baseball team earned a 6-4 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St.Francis (Ill.) in the final game of a three-game series with the Fighting Saints.

The Peregrines (13-14, 8-10 CCAC) were led by Cole Garcia (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon) who went 2-for-4 at the plate and a run scored while Andrew Atchison (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) went 1-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI and one run scored.

After two scoreless innings to start off the contest, the Peregrines would jump on the board in the third inning, after some defensive miscues from Saint Francis helped lead the Black and Gold to a 3-run inning.

Junior Tyler Crussen (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) would reach on a fielding error while driving in Garcia for the first run of the game.

Atchison would add to the Peregrines lead with a 2-RBI single later in the inning, which plated Crussen and Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) giving the Black and Gold a 3-0 advantage.

Purdue Calumet would increase their lead in the top of the fourth frame, after a two-out RBI-double by Alec Skalka (Munster, Ind./Munster) scored Jonny Albers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) who singled earlier in the inning to make it 4-0.

The Fighting Saints (23-23, 8-14) would eventually even the score in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a 4-run frame to knot the game at 4-4.

Purdue Calumet would fight back in the top half of the eighth inning and score a pair of runs thanks to an error by the Fighting Saints to give the Peregrines a 6-4 lead.

Jimmy Skiff (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) would enter the game in the ninth inning to close it out and pick up the save in the Peregrines 6-4 victory.

Freshman Josh Arnold (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) started the game for the Black and Gold and received the no decision after throwing 6.2 innings and giving up three runs, zero earned, and striking out three.

Brett Shoults (Oxford, Ind./Benton Central) would enter the game in relief and improve his record to 3-0, after hurling 1.1 innings and striking out two.

The Peregrines return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on CCAC opponent St. Xavier in a twinbill starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)​

Purdue Calumet Falls in Two Games at St. Ambrose, 11-3 & 4-3
The Purdue University Calumet softball team dropped two games in a league doubleheader at St. Ambrose University Sunday, completing a stretch of 11 contests in seven days.

The Peregrines (17-20, 6-6 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell by scores of 11-3 (five innings) and 4-3 to the host Fighting Bees, who improved to 25-9 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Freshman Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Peregrines’ offensively, finishing the day 2-for-5 with three RBI, a double and a run scored.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Tuesday, April 19, with a road twin bill at Olivet Nazarene. Game 1 in Bourbonnais starts at 3 p.m. CT.

GAME 1: ST. AMBROSE 11, PURDUE CALUMET 3 (5 innings)
The Bees used a big six-run, third inning to blow the game open in the Peregrines’ opening-contest loss. After SAU took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Bees used six hits and capitalized on a Purdue Calumet error to take a commanding 7-0 lead after three.

Purdue Calumet would answer in the fourth, as freshman Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) belted a double to left center with two outs to score a run and junior teammate Allyson Leach (Demotte, Ind./North Newton) followed with an RBI-single up the middle to cut the lead to five, at 7-2.

The Bees would tack on another run in the fourth, followed by the Peregrines’ final run in the fifth, scored on Kotzo RBI-walk with the bases loaded. But SAU would score three in the bottom of the frame to end the game early and pick up the Game 1 victory.

Kotzo led the Peregrines’ six-hit effort with a 1-for-2 performance with a double, two RBI and a run. Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), Sydney Schmitt (Anderson, Ind./Anderson), Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield), Leach and Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) added hits for Purdue Calumet in the loss.

GAME 2: ST. AMBROSE 4, PURDUE CALUMET 3
The Bees never lost the lead in Game 2, as SAU pitching kept the Peregrines’ scoreless in the final three innings to cement the sweep.

After SAU took a 3-0 lead after two, Purdue Calumet would answer with two runs in the third, both scored with two outs. Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany) would keep the inning alive with a walk, allowing Tessa Steffens to reach on an error. In the same play, the Bees would commit another error to allow both runners to score.

Trailing by one, 3-2, Purdue Calumet would tie the game in the fourth, as Holly Pagan doubled after an Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind/Lake Central) walk to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind/Munster) would come up with the lone RBI of the inning with a single to right field to make it 3-3.

But the Bees would answers, as Darian Gillette blasted a leadoff home run in the fourth, which proved to be the game-winner. SAU starter Sam Flerlage had two straight 1-2-3 innings in the fifth and sixth and reliever Christina Pembrook picked up the save with a perfect seventh to preserve the win.

Purdue Calumet connected on just three hits, as Steffens, Kotzo and Pagan were the lone Peregrines to connect for the offense.

Purdue Calumet Sweeps Sunday Competition with Wins over CCSJ and St. Ambrose
Host Purdue University Calumet women's tennis team picked up a pair of league wins in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference double event with Calumet College of St. Joseph and St. Ambrose (Iowa) Sunday at Dowling Park.

The Peregrines (6-5, 3-4 CCAC) first topped the Crimson Wave of Calumet College, 5-4, before defeating St. Ambrose, 6-3, in the afternoon at the Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

Purdue Calumet returns to action next Saturday, April 23 as the Peregrines travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on CCAC foe Roosevelt.

PURDUE CALUMET 6, ST. AMBROSE 3
Three Peregrines swept both their singles and doubles matches to help lead the Purdue Calumet women to a big win over the Fighting Bees in Sundays’ second match.

Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), Kasey Kulesa (Munster, Ind./Munster), and Cynthia-Basu Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) all won at both singles and doubles to lead the way.

The No. 2 pair of Kvachkoff and Kulesa first topped SAU’s Sammy Carr and Anne Bohnert, 8-4, in doubles play. Kvachkoff and Kulesa followed that with straight-set wins at No. 3 and 4 singles over Carr and Bohnert, respectively.

Basu-Chavez paired up with teammate Emily Pearson (Hammond, Ind./Morton) to beat the Bees’ Shannon McEachern and Sarah Wurster, 8-4, and then used that momentum to top Wurster at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Also picking up wins at singles for Purdue Calumet was Lori Haas (Bismarck, Ill./Bismarck-Henning) at No. 1 singles, who bounced back after a 3-6 loss in the first set to top Griffin Rasche in the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

PURDUE CALUMET 5, CALUMET ST. JOSEPH 4
Purdue Calumet topped a short-handed Calumet College team with five wins by default, as Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville), and Emily Pearson (Hammond, Ind./Morton) won by default in singles competition.

Freshman Sarah Dingman (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) fought hard in No. 3 singles, falling to CCSJ's Kate Swisher, 6-4, 6-3, and the No. 1 duo of Basu-Chavez and Pearson fell in doubles competition to CCSJ’s Mariana Portela and Samantha Castellanos, 8-3.

The pairs of Kvachkoff and Kasey Kulesa (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Baez and Dingman also won by default in doubles competition.

Purdue Calumet Tops CCSJ for First Win; Falls to St. Ambrose Sunday
The Purdue University Calumet men's tennis team split against two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents in a double event, defeating Calumet St. Joseph in the morning before falling to St. Ambrose (Iowa) in the afternoon Sunday at Dowling Park.

The Peregrines (1-8, 1-5 CCAC) defeated the Crimson Wave (1-5, 0-3 CCAC), 5-4, to pick up their first win of the season, before falling to St. Ambrose, 7-2, in the afternoon at the Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

Purdue Calumet returns to action next Saturday April 23, as the Peregrines travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on CCAC foe Roosevelt.

PURDUE CALUMET 5, CALUMET ST. JOSEPH 4
Junior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won in No. 2 singles against CCSJ's Nilson Cano in three sets, after falling in the first set 5-7, Mudd fought back to win the last two sets 6-4, 10-6.

Sophomore Delmer Fleming (Lowell, Ind/Lowell) won his second straight match, winning in straight sets at No. 5 singles against CCSJ's David Espinoza, 6-2, 6-0.

Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fought hard in No. 1 singles, falling to CCSJ's Santiago Castaneda, 7-6, 7-6.

Fleming followed up his morning win with his third straight victory in the afternoon, defeating SAU's Kevin Beckett in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

James Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Oak Forest) and Fleming then won at No. 3 doubles in the afternoon, defeating SAU's Jake Anderson and Colin Stiefer, 8-4.

Pimentel and Mudd fought hard in No. 1 doubles, falling to SAU's Bart Van Rooijen and Dave Smith, 8-5.
