The Purdue University Calumet women’s tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Judson University Saturday afternoon.

Senior Lori Haas (Bismarck, Ill./Bismarck-Henning) captured a straight-set victory at No.1 singles, defeating Marcilyn Rowan 6-3, 6-1.

Cynthia Basu-Chavz (Merrillville/Merrillville) also came away with a win at No. 4 singles, winning in three sets over Tricia Poremba.

The No.1 tandem of Hass and Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won the lone doubles match for the Black and Gold, defeating the Marcilyn Rowan and Lauren Saiki 8-5.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Wednesday, April 13, when the take on CCAC opponent Robert Morris University.

Men's Tennis Falls to Judson in CCAC Contest Saturday
The Purdue University Calumet men’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Judson University Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fought hard in No. 1 singles, falling to Judson’s Chris Kerswell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

James Newman (Orland Park, Ill./ Oak Forest) also took a game in each set against Michael Bruen, falling 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Pimentel and Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) took two games before falling to the duo of Elisha Hougland and David Hendel 8-2

Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday, April 16, when the take on CCAC opponent St. Francis (Ill.) at Dowling Park at 10:00 a.m. (CT).

Baseball Drops 2-1 Decision to CCSJ Sunday Afternoon
The Purdue University Calumet baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Calumet St. Joseph Sunday afternoon.

In a low scoring contest, pitchers for both teams proved to be dominant early on in the game.

After five scoreless innings to start off the day, CCSJ tacked on the first run in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Crimson Wave the 1-0 advantage.

Senior Cody Dykema (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central)would lead off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple over the center fielders head.

Eric Sickles (Benicia, Calif./Benicia) would plate Dykema on a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1 before heading in to the seventh frame.

The Crimson Wave would score what would be the game winning run in the top of the eighth, after an RBI-single by Nicholas Campanile drove in Dominic Hartman to make it 2-1.

CCSJ pitcher Enrique Zamora wouldn’t allow another runner to score, closing out the game to earn the win for the Crimson Wave.

Zamora pitched a complete game while giving up six hits and striking out 13.

Senior pitcher Phil Madvek (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) got the no-decision for the Peregrines, throwing seven innings and allowing zero earned runs while striking out four.

John Cristo (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Peregrines at the plate with a pair of hits while Tyler Crussen (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) went 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Peregrines return to action Tuesday, April 12, when they host CCAC foe Roosevelt University at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Dowling Park.​

Purdue Calumet Fires Perfect Game in 16-0 Win over Mount Mary
The Purdue University Calumet softball team put together its first perfect game in school history in Sunday’s 16-0, five-inning nonleague win over visiting Mount Mary (Wis..

The Peregrines (12-15) rattled off a season-high 16 runs on 12 hits, didn’t commit an error, and the pitching duo of starter Carly Murphy (Munster, Ind./Munster) and reliever Leslie Ford (Garden City, Kan./Garden City) didn’t give up a hit or a walk in the five-inning affair.

Originally scheduled a doubleheader at Dowling Park’s Fifth Third Field, the second game with NCAA Division III Mount Mary (2-9) was called before it started due to a steady rain.

Senior Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) continued her hot streak at the plate, as she opened the game’s scoring with a three-run shot to left for her second home run of the year to give the Peregrines an early 3-0 advantage after one inning. Barajas finished 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Peregrines’ hit parade and freshman teammate Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Barajas is currently on a four-game hitting streak, as the senior is batting .600 in the last four contests.

Purdue Calumet would add four more runs in the second, as Alex Morales (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) started the scoring with an RBI triple to right field to score Hannah Lopez (Granada Hills, Calif./Bishop Alemany), who singled. Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield), Sardella, and Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) all added RBI of their own to give the Peregrines a commanding 7-0 lead after two.

The Peregrines would get six runs in the third — the biggest hits two-RBI triples by Morales and Sardella — and then round out the scoring with three runs in the fourth, capped by Dri Tashijan’s (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) RBI-single to left to score Kimmy Cordy (Youngstown, Ohio/Liberty) and make it 16-0.

Morales was a perfect 2-for-2 with two triples, three RBI and two runs scored to bolster the Peregrines’ offense that saw all 19 players see the field.

Murphy picked up the win in the circle, striking out five in her hitless effort in three innings, while Ford added a strikeout in the combined perfect-game shutout.

The Peregrines return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Trinity International (Ill.) for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference pair in Deerfield, Ill. Game 1 begins at 3 p.m. CT.
