Purdue Calumet’s Christina Colon Named Daktronics Scholar-Athlete

PUC-PeregrinsPurdue University Calumet sophomore defensive specialist Christina Colon was one of 455 volleyball players of the NAIA to be named a 2014 Daktronics Scholar-Athlete, as released by the national office Friday.

Colon (Chicago, Ill./Kennedy) claimed her first honor as a Peregrine and joins Purdue Calumet athletes Kenneth Karrson (men’s cross country) and Rachel Shmagranoff (women’s soccer) as NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes this season.

Colon, majoring in communications, met the criteria for the award, which includes a minimum 3.5 grade point average and at least a junior standing academically.

The defensive specialist played in 17 sets this season, recording a service ace and 17 digs for the Peregrines, who set 18 school records since the program was reintroduced in 2010. Those included wins (10), kills (1,130), kills per set (10.00), attack percentage (.130), assists per set (9.27), service aces (180), block assists (231), digs (1,614), total blocks (141.5), and points per set (12.85).

The NAIA is the governing body for athletics programs at its nearly 300 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. The long-held mission of the NAIA is to promote the education and development of well-rounded students and productive citizens through intercollegiate athletics. The association offers equitable access and opportunities for participation in its 23 national championship events held annually throughout the country.
