Purdue Calumet Nursing/Spanish Student Receives International Scholarship

Walsh-Kelley-2015A Purdue University Calumet Honors College student has received a $3,500 scholarship to study abroad this fall in Costa Rica.

Kelley Walsh of New Lenox, Ill. Is the first Purdue Calumet student to receive a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.

Departs Sept. 26
Walsh, 19, is a sophomore nursing major and Spanish minor. She departs Sept. 26 for a three-month experience at the Universidad Veritas in San Jose, where she will take health care credit courses in English and medical Spanish. She will stay with a host family.

“I have wanted to study abroad, so I am excited to receive this scholarship,” Walsh, an aspiring nurse anesthetist, said, “Since I pay for my education myself, this scholarship is much appreciated.”

While she added that the reputation of Purdue Calumet’s nursing program attracted her to the Hammond university, Walsh also received help from campus Education Abroad Coordinator Judy Moore and Assistant Director of Immigration and Education Abroad April Valentine in navigating through the scholarship application process.
