Purdue Calumet Hosts NWI Regional Science Olympiad Saturday, January 31, 2015

purdue-cal-griffinNineteen teams of high school and middle school students will compete in the Purdue University Calumet Science Olympiad, Saturday, January 31, on campus.

Competition in dozens of events
Modeled after the Olympics Games, the Science Olympiad is a national initiative, featuring students from each school team competing in more than 20 hands-on events relating to biology, chemistry, earth science, engineering and physics. Each team records a score in each event. The top six scoring teams from the middle school division and top scoring four high school teams advance to state competition.

Comprising the high school division are teams from Clark, Gavit and Morton (Hammond), Hammond Academy of Science and Technology, Highland, Merrillville, East Noble, Rensselaer and three from Munster.

Competing middle school division teams are from Eggers and Scott (Hammond), Clark (St. John), Forest Ridge Academy (Schererville), Hammond Academy of Science and Technology, Hebron, Our Lady of Grace (Highland), St. John the Baptist (Whiting), St. Stanislaus (East Chicago), Wheeler and Wilbur Wright (Munster).

Advancing STEM education
“We are excited to host this competition, attract young science-oriented students to our campus and, in the process, advance Purdue Calumet’s commitment to STEM education,” Purdue Calumet Science Olympiad Director, Associate Professor and Honors College Faculty Advisor Karen Bishop Morris said.

Competition begins at 8:15 a.m. and continues until mid-afternoon in the Gyte Science Building, Student Union & Library, Fitness & Recreation Center and Challenger Learning Center.
