Porter Regional Hospital Hosts an Open House for the Center for Cardiovascular Medicine

Interested patrons followed eagerly behind the knowledgeable staff as they lead them through the cheerful halls of Porter Regional Hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Medicine on Saturday morning. The staff from the Center was there that day, and they were very excited to educate and enlighten the community.

Kelly Credit, Director of System Strategy and Marketing, met all who came to the open house with a welcoming smile.

“It’s an opportunity for the public to come in and get a heart healthy breakfast, and more importantly for them to get a guided tour from our clinicians to see every component or our Center for Cardiovascular Medicine which is a complete heart hospital within Porter Regional Hospital,” Credit said. “We’re the only hospital in Northwest Indiana to have this and so we thought that this was a good way for everyone get an idea about what we really mean when we talk about our hospital within a hospital.”

It was a very unique setup. People came in to the Center and were treated to breakfast. It was a feel-good spread of fruit, muffins, granola bars, yogurt, and assorted drinks. Afterward, groups were formed and taken on 30 minute tours. At the end of the tour, individuals were able to take part in free health screenings.

I was able to get a guided tour by Terri Gingerich, the Cardiovascular Service Line Director. She oversees everything that happens with the walls of the Center.

“The whole concept behind the open house was to really give the community and patients an opportunity to come in, ask questions, and see the inside view that they wouldn’t normally see,” Gingerich said. “It’s a brand new facility, but the staff has been here for 20 or 30 years. So that knowledge and expertise is still here and that experience lies within this building.”

The facilities are top-notch and the staff are well-trained individuals from all over the world. You can get all of the best heart care under one roof. There is a heart failure center, a center for heart valve disease, a stroke center, cardiac rehabilitation. They do diagnostic procedures, interventional procedures, coronary bypass surgeries, vascular surgeons, interventional procedures, and much more.

“We are rated nationally in cardiac care and we’ve won many awards.” Karen Kelter, Marketing Manager, said.”And we really are close to home, the place where anyone can come for any cardiovascular need. Everything is together. You can come in, register, get your procedure done, and then be released from this area.”

This is a great convenience to have. Not only is it convenient, but the amount of time that can be cut between registration and a procedure could save someone’s life. It feels good to know that something so great is so close by!
