Purdue University North Central will continue it a Brownbag Series on Diversity with a discussion of "The Dirty Poor: Literary Representations of Poverty in the United States" on Nov. 28 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 170A, located just off the PNC cafeteria. It is free and open to the public and guests may bring their lunch. Varying opinions are welcome.
The Brownbag Series on Diversity presents a different seminar topic each month throughout the academic year exploring topics and issues that can contribute to the development of a tolerant, inclusive campus and community.
"The Dirty Poor: Literary Representations of Poverty in the United States" discussion will be led by students in the English 232 class taught by Bob Mellin, continuing lecturer of English.
The conversation will explore what cultural needs are met by representing the poor as physically and morally dirty, genetically flawed and in general, "trash?" The students will also discuss aspects of Russell Banks's "Trailerpark" and Breece D'J Pancake's "Collected Stories," "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Squidbillies" and "Justified."
