PNC ASL Club Guest Speakers at Michigan City Library

Michigan-City-Public-LibraryThe Purdue University North Central American Sign Language Club will host the presentation "How to Raise a Deaf Child" by Roger and Nina Coyer, who are both deaf, on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Michigan City Library, 100 E. Fourth St. This event is free and open to the public. Cookies and coffee will be served. The presentation will be in American Sign Language and interpreted into spoken English.

The Coyers will discuss topics related to raising a deaf or hard of hearing child:

  • Expectations
  • Education Choices
  • Communication Methods: Choices & Use (ASL, Signed English, English, etc.)
  • Positive Role Models
  • Support from Family, Friends, Professionals
  • Love, Respect, Acceptance
  • "The Ten Commandments of Deaf Culture"

 

Nina was born deaf. Roger became deaf at an early age. Both were raised by hearing parents without sign language and learned ASL during their college years.

Nina is a tenured professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Roger is a retired teacher and head coach for the Kentucky School for the Deaf and continues to mentor students there. As successful deaf adults, they will share their view of how positive parenting affected their lives and outcomes.
