Jaisyn Reese, a pediatric patient, is another example of how CHC's interdisciplinary team helps patients and their loved ones. Jaisyn was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), an aggressive type of tumor that begins on the brainstem. He was receiving treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, but he and his family needed support at home, too. CHC is the only local hospice organization that admits pediatric patients – and has board-certified pediatric staff to care for them. "They would help us when we were here and they could communicate with St. Jude's to give him the best care possible," said Angie Reese, Jaisyn's mother.
The time came when Jaisyn's mom became so weary, she called for extra help. "At 4:00am I called and said I can't do it anymore," Angie remembered. "I need you to come. Tiffany and Stacy (CHC nurses) were here all day, until the end." The morning that Jaisyn died the family took pictures and celebrated Christmas early; it was incredibly difficult. Jaisyn was lovingly surrounded by those he treasured most: his mom, dad, and his sisters, Karrissa and Trisha.
Following Jaisyn's passing, his family found ways to continue their relationship with him. "Let me talk about him. I have to be able to talk about my son," says Angie. The family also has a digital photo frame with changing pictures and videos. Hearing his voice and seeing his face is comforting.
Jaisyn's Journey will continue because he has loved ones who carry his story with them – every day. And if you see his family, say his name, ask about him and let them share about Jaisyn… the mighty warrior.
