Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research

AlzheimersAssociationAlzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter invites Merrillville residents, individuals and companies in the surrounding counties to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The 2014 Walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, at Hidden Lake Park, located at 6355 Broadway Ave. Participants can register by visiting alz.org/walk.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for all participants to learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support and education programs and services.

Last year, the Merrillville walk raised more than $123,000 and had over 700 participants. This year, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to exceed the 2013 totals and have more participants involved.

“Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed,” said Community Outreach Specialist Katie Slater. “Raising dollars to fund research to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease is more important than ever, and the Walk to End Alzheimer's is the largest fundraising event for Alzheimer's disease in the entire world."

The Alzheimer’s Association thanks our 2014 statewide sponsors: American Senior Communities, Eli Lilly and Company and Kittle’s Furniture.

"This is Kittle's third consecutive year as statewide sponsor for the Walk to End Alzheimer's,” Kittle’s Furniture CEO, Eric Easter said. “Because many of our associates’ lives have been affected, we have a very deep commitment to this cause and get great participation in all of the events we conduct in support of the Alzheimer's Association."

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate. More than 5 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s, including 100,000 Hoosiers.
