Worthy Women Recovery held its sixth annual bowling event at Casey Lanes in La Porte. The goal of the event is to raise funds for their Home which is being built on Maple Avenue.
Local business, churches and political candidates were welcomed to sponsor and join in on the fun.
According to Pat Graham, who is in charge of the building committee, “There will be enough room for fourteen women and one caregiver. This is a great opportunity to help the women who need a place to go and get better.”
There were fourteen teams and various individuals who were there to enjoy an afternoon bowling and socializing. It was very apparent that the participants were excited about the home opening and helping the women of LaPorte to make strides towards recovery.
The Executive Director of Worthy Women Recovery, Sonshine Troche, was very excited to have such a strong turnout. “Our goal was $10,000 coming into the event, and before we are even starting the bowling, we are just over that amount. Things are moving really fast now that Pat has taken over as the committee chair, and allows me to help raise money for the house.”
Hannah Hamilton, a student at LaPorte High School, saw a flyer about the event and was very excited to participate. She is part of a group called La Porte Girls Reserves and in her first year with the group. “We do community service work, jobs and several things at school to help earn points so we can go to a dance. It is really to help the community and to give back. The money that we raise through various fundraisers goes back into the community as well. I thought it would be a lot of fun because I like to bowl. It is nice to see so many people here and being happy.”
Once the bowling got started, there were tickets being sold for various items such as massages, a Mickey Mouse gift box, and gift packages. Various committee members circulated with the items and sold raffle tickets for the chance to win. There were a lot of smiles and high fives as winning numbers were announced of the winning numbers.
“It is so important to have organizations like Worthy Women Recovery to help our community members. We have some issues with drugs in our community, and programs like this will allow people to know that there are places to get help and support,” said Al Ott, who is one of the candidates for LaPorte County Sheriff.
In addition to the many raffle items, they had candy leftover from the Candy Sale on April 11th. The candy sale was supported by Captain Ed’s and LaPorte Savings Bank.
