One-City-One-Sound-2011-1“Mega-Concert” to Feature Hundreds of Student Performers

Festive holiday music will fill the air as more than 1,500 vocalists and instrumentalists perform together at the Michigan City Area Schools’ “One City, One Sound” concert on Thursday, December 13. The event will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Michigan City High School gymnasium. Admission is free, however all who attend are encouraged to bring a towel (bath towel, kitchen towel, paper towels, etc.) to assist Sand Castle Shelter, in a “Wipe Out Homelessness” campaign. Monetary donations to the shelter will also be accepted that evening.

This year’s “One City, One Sound” will feature:

  • 454 voices in a chorus of fifth graders from all nine Michigan City elementary schools.
  • 350 voices in a chorus of students from all three middle schools.
  • 170 voices in a chorus of high school students.
  • 42 voices in the Michigan City High School Treble Chorale.
  • 27 voices in the Michigan City High School “City Singers.”
  • 8 hand bell players in the Michigan City High School “City Ringers.”
  • 139 instrumentalists in a fifth and sixth grade beginning band.
  • 187 instrumentalists in a seventh and eighth grade band.
  • 132 instrumentalists from the MCHS cadet, concert, and symphonic bands.

Each group will perform individually, and the closing number will involve all bands and choruses in a selection entitled, “Let There Be Peace.” Other numbers will include “Santa at the Symphony,” “Sparklejollytwinklejingley,” and “No Greater Gift.” Music teachers from throughout the Michigan City Area Schools will lead their groups; the combined numbers will be under the direction of MCHS choral director Dennis Kienitz and band director Quincy Ford.

One-City-One-Sound-2011-2Music programs at MCAS have seen a resurgence in recent years; the 2012 “One City One Sound” will feature the largest number of students in the mega-concert’s six-year history, with an increase of more than 200 performers since last year’s event. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to see and hear our music program, bottom to top,” says Kienitz. “It also gives the younger students a chance to see what’s possible for them at higher levels.”

The concert will be broadcast live on Channel 98 educational TV, and will stream live on the Michigan City Area Schools web site at EducateMC.net. It will also air live on Michigan City radio stations WEFM (95.9 FM) and WIMS (AM 1420).

Note: Pahs Road in the area of Michigan City High School will be closed to west-bound traffic prior to the One City One Sound concert, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. During this time, all traffic departing the high school will be routed east on Pahs to Johnson Road.
