Washington-ParkGreen-minded groups seeking volunteers to improve shoreline

In partnership with several area environmental and community groups across the region, NIPSCO will take part in the second annual Michigan City Beaches & Blueways Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon CDT.

Volunteers will spend the morning cleaning the shorelines of Washington Park Beach and Trail Creek. Community members are encouraged to participate. Following the cleanup, volunteers 21 years of age and older are invited to lunch and wine tasting from noon to 2 p.m., sponsored by Barefoot Winery.

Organizations partnering in the cleanup effort include NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Team (NEAT), Trail Creek Watershed Group, Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department, Alliance for the Great Lakes, Urban Waters, Save the Dunes, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Michigan City Port Authority, Michigan City Forester, MCNEAT, Michigan City Sanitary District, the LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District, LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Barefoot Winery.

Helping to keep Indiana’s shorelines clean, especially after the eventful summer months, is essential,” said Kelly Carmichael, NiSource director of environmental policy. “We are always proud to get our employees and their families involved in projects benefiting our communities. Last year was a great success, and we look forward to sharing this experience with other partnering organizations again this season.

Those who would like to participate in the event should register at the Alliance for the Great Lakes site: www.greatlakesadopt.org.
