New MCHS Associate Principal, MCAS Assistant Special Ed Director Named in 2016

Candy_Van_BuskirkThe Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees approved the appointment of two administrators at its regular meeting on June 28. Both are filling vacant positions.

Candy Van Buskirk was named Associate Principal of Michigan City High School. Mrs. VanBuskirk has been assistant principal at New Prairie High School for the three years. She led the development of New Prairie’s well-regarded AP and dual credit programs and also helped lead the implementation of the school’s one-to-one technology program. Her teaching background is in biology and chemistry; she taught science at New Buffalo High School for many years. A former All-American basketball player, she has also coached women’s basketball at both the high school and university levels. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Bowling Green University, a master’s in Education from the University of Dayton, and a Master of Educational Leadership from Western Michigan.

“We are thrilled to welcome Candy to Team MCAS,” said MCAS Superintendent Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins. “Her experience in instructional leadership, technology integration, and climate building will be a great asset to our high school.”

Stacy_AttarStacy Attar was appointed to a new role as Assistant Director of Special Education. Since 2012, Mrs. Attar has serving MCAS in a special education support role, working with teachers and support staff in IEP development, curriculum planning, behavior management, and case management in both self-contained and inclusion settings. She has a broad background in special ed, and worked for many years as a special ed teacher, school counselor, and department chair for the Baltimore, Maryland, Public Schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Special Ed from Purdue and a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, and will receive her Educational Leadership certification from Western Governors University in July.
