For almost four years, Mitch Gaffigan has been proudly serving Purdue Federal Credit Union (Purdue Federal) as account vice president for the Member Business Services team. He joined the team back in 2019, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“The experience overall has been just excellent; it’s the best in banking that I've had,” he said.
The core of Gaffigan’s work centers around two main factors, the first being finances. Along with the tasks that come with typical office work, Gaffigan assists with the various financial needs of the business accounts and members who use Purdue Federal for their banking.
“When a deal is in the works, I take a look at the financials, make sure that we're in a good place, and see if there's anything else that we need for it,” Gaffigan said. “Then I forward it to our credit department once I've got the information that I'm looking for.”
While he very much enjoys what he does on a day-to-day basis, what truly makes it complete for Gaffigan is the people–both who he works with and the members he serves.
“My favorite aspects are the people and the members. Those are the people I work with, and then the members who I serve,” he said. “My colleagues and I all have a similar objective, and that is that we’re always there for our members–a common objective is to make sure that we're delivering what the member expects.”
He’s proud to be a part of a team passionate about reaching the same goals and helping their people, and it's truly a rewarding experience to then see those people reach their own financial goals with help from him and Purdue Federal.
“I had an opportunity where I got a call, and this person said that he needed to close within 30 days on this multimillion-dollar purchase, and if he didn't, he would end up losing $30,000,” Gaffigan said. “We ended up aligning all the departments that we needed, we got it done, and we were able to deliver a great product which was what he was looking for.”
In addition to making a lifelong positive impact on Purdue Federal business members, the name Gaffigan is bringing smiles to people all across the nation. What many may be surprised to know is that Gaffigan has quite the famous family–his brother just so happens to be the well-known comedian Jim Gaffigan, and it’s made for fun conversations for Mitch while on the job.
“The fortunate thing about Jim and his acts is that he’s a clean comic, so I have yet to run into a circumstance where he's created an issue. The fact that Jim is my brother has never hurt business,” he said.
Gaffigan noted that having a famous relative definitely has its perks, and he always does his best to bring the Purdue Federal team in on the fun as well.
“One great thing that happened was when Jim appeared recently at the Chicago Theatre. I ended up renting a large luxury bus, and I took about 40 of our Purdue Federal members to see the show. We had a great time,” he said.
It’s moments like these that make Gaffigan realize just how much he’s thankful for all the opportunities brought to him through Purdue Federal.
“I would say that my past banking experiences basically built the foundation for what I need to be able to do,” he said. “When I started here, it was easy for me to see how great Purdue Federal was. I get to do the work I really like to do, and it’s nice to find a place to really consider a professional home.”
