Mishawaka Marian came out on top at Lake Central’s Girls’ Basketball Holiday Hoops Tournament, which wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon. The visiting Knights defeated the host Lake Central 58-40 to cap off two days of quality basketball.
The McCutcheon Mavericks, visiting from Lafayette, beat the Portage Indians 57-51 to claim 3rd place in the tournament, backed by a strong 22 point performance from Daylynn Thornton.
The most exciting game of the day came in the matchup to determine 5th place between the LaPorte Slicers and the Munster Mustangs.
Things looked lopsided in the Slicers favor early on, as they held the Mustangs to just 2 points in the first quarter for a 17-2 lead. Munster rallied and turned the tables on LaPorte – holding them to 2 points in the 2nd quarter, entering the half 19-13.
The Slicers held on to a shrinking lead, in the final 30 seconds, surrendered an equalizing 3 to the Mustangs – leaving the score 35-35. LaPorte’s Alanitiaza Biggers came through for her team at the last second, dropping in a tie-breaking buzzer beater to defeat the Indians 37-35.
