Mayor Ron Meer is proud to announce that the Michigan City Sanitary District (District) will be receiving a grant of $171,133 from the Indiana Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Committee to help fund the purchase of three (3) new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered Dump Trucks. The funds supporting this award are provided through Volkswagen’s commitments in a national consent decree. The Michigan City Sanitary District applied for these funds in June of 2019.
These new clean burning CNG Dump trucks will emit very low amounts of greenhouse gas, especially as compared to diesel powered vehicles. As Mayor Meer explained: “The City of Michigan City and the Sanitary District have made strong commitments to environmental protection, especially clean air.” In April, the City of Michigan City was awarded the 2019 Northwest Indiana Partners for Clean Air Municipal Award for its efforts to reduce air pollution through its use of CNG powered vehicle and its City-wide energy saving projects. Mayor Meer also commented on the strong application submitted by the District, saying: “The Environmental Mitigation Trust Committee received requests totaling $27 million for the $9.86 million available, and the Sanitary District was awarded these funds because of the strong application submitted that highlighted its previous commitment to its CNG refueling station and increasing fleet of CNG powered vehicles.
Since Mayor Meer took office in 2012, the Sanitary District has received a total amount of Grant Funding for its CNG Refueling Station and CNG Vehicles of $633,633.00. Michael Kuss, General Manager of the Sanitary District, explained: “The District currently operates eleven (11) CNG powered vehicles that reduce greenhouse gas and other pollutant emissions by over 10,000 pounds per year!”
The Dump Trucks will primarily be used by the Refuse Department. The Dump Trucks currently used by the Refuse Department are over 20 years old, diesel fueled, and in need of replacement. The Sanitary District has until December 2020 to use the matching $171,133 for the purchase of the three (3) Dump Trucks. The Dump Trucks are expected to cost about $220,000 each.
