Michigan City Public Art Committee & ArtSpace Celebrate Sculptfusion June 21st

la-porte-chamberThe Michigan City Public Art Committee (MAC) will be hosting a kickoff event for Sculptfusion Friday, June 21 from 4pm to 6pm located at Walnut Ink Gallery, 607 Franklin Street in downtown Michigan City, Indiana. The public is invited to attend. Sculptfusion is MAC’s first public art project focusing on the area of downtown Michigan City known as the Uptown Arts District and the Washington Park and Charles Westcott Park areas.

Three sculptures have already been installed: two in Washington Park, one in Charles Westcott Park; and five more are planned for installation on Franklin Street the week of June 18. The sculptures were created by artists from the Midwest and will be on exhibit through June, 2014. Brochures describing Sculptfusion will be available in July at area businesses. ArtSpace, the nonprofit developer working to transform the vacant Warren Building in downtown Michigan City into a mixed-use live/work arts facility, will be present at the launch event to unveil an art project that will engage the public.

Throughout the summer and fall, ArtSpace will be working with local artist Deb Landry on a community art project for the Warren Building. Members of the community will be encouraged to participate by creating their own artwork which will eventually be incorporated into a final art display which will be installed on the Warren Building’s facade. Attendees at the Sculptfusion celebration will be the first participants in the project called, “Artful Voice”.

Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer will greet guests and interested visitors with a welcome. Guests will have the opportunity for a docent led tour of the Sculptfusion artwork. Refreshments will be served and have been donated by local businesses.
