Michigan City Police Department Receives 2015 Federal Traffic Safety/Occupant Protection Grant

michigan-city-policeThe Michigan City Police Department has received a $20,000 Federal Traffic Safety/Occupant Protection grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).

The Grant has allows the Michigan City Police Department to add extra patrols with off-duty Officers, to enforce seatbelt violations and traffic offences. Officers working the grant also assisted with several calls for service.

Even though we are well aware wearing seat belts save lives, there are still motorists who fail to buckle up.

In fact, right now, nearly 50 percent of fatalities in passenger car accidents in Indiana are due to occupants who did not buckle up.

Chief Mark Swistek, encourages motorist to wear their seatbelts and slow down to help reduce injuries and saves lives.

Motorist are asked to be aware of Halloween activities beginning this weekend. Saturday, October 24 Boo at the Zoo 1st Session: 12:30pm-2:30pm, 2nd Session: 4:30pm-6:30pm, Thursday, October 29 City wide Trick or Treat at Ames field from 5PM until 7PM, Saturday, October 31 City wide Trick or Treat from 5PM until 7PM. The Michigan City Police Department will have officers working extra patrols for these events.

The Michigan City Police Department will have extra traffic safety patrols for this month, including the Countywide DUI Task Force to improve the Quality of Life to the citizens of Michigan City.
