Michigan City High School Wolves Wire, September 2015

MC Wolves logoWelcome to the 2014-2015 school year. We have had an amazing beginning to the school year. Our students have demonstrated great excitement and are highly engaged in the many activities that are available at Michigan City High School.

Our vision at Michigan City High School is Excellence for Everyone, as you can see from a few of our highlights, we are excelling in many areas. Whether our students are attending Notre Dame, Indiana University, Indiana State, Purdue, or Ball State, Ivy Tech, our job is to work with students and their families to help find the right path.

We are now in year two of both the early college and honors college program. Both programs will assist our students in graduating college and career ready. Students in both programs will also take part in our initiative to become a 1:1 building. Starting with our early college sophomores this fall, students will receive a Chromebook computer that they will use inside and out of the building. Teachers and administrators at Michigan City High School have worked over the last year to develop a technology action plan that will ensure our students are highly engaged in their learning and able to access their lessons whether at school or home. More information regarding our 1:1 rollout will be provided in the coming weeks.

Last year, I spoke of the SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) goals for the 2014-15 school year. To recap, the goals were as follows:

By the end of the 2014-15 school year, 70% or more of the class of 2017 (sophomores) will pass the English 10 ECA

By the end of the 2014-15 school year, 75% or more of the class of 2017 (sophomores) will have passed the Algebra 1 ECA

By the end of the 2014-15 school year, 90% or more of the class of 2015 will graduate

By the end of the 2014-15 school year, 70% or more of the class of 2015 will graduate college and career ready

As many of you may be aware, due to issues with scoring, the Indiana Department of Education will delay the release of school accountability grades, normally released in September, until December or possibly later. As the scoring is sorted out, our final numbers for 2014-15 will have to wait to be finalized. While our data is not finalized, we are optimistic that we will again, as done for the 2013-14 school year, meet our school Smart goals.

Please continue to remain informed of the many things taking place with your student via RDS and with the school by continuing to read the Wolves Wire, by being involved with the Parent Network, and following us on social media. I would like to thank everyone for helping us start strong and I look forward to your continued support throughout the remainder of the year.
