Michigan City High School Wolves Wire, January 2017

MC Wolves logoHappy 2017! I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Winter Break. It appears Frosty wanted to visit us earlier than usual and join us for the start of second semester. It may be very cold outside, but it is time for the high school students and staff to warm up to the very busy second semester.

Students will be meeting with their counselors selecting courses for the 2017-18 school year through January and February. It is important that you are involved and discuss course selections with your student. This is the time to discuss your student’s future after high school and how the selections made impact College and Career opportunities once they graduate. MCHS staff partners with you to prepare your student to be College and Career ready. The counselors are available to answer questions and provide input. The MCHS Course Selection Guide can be found on the MCHS webpage.

Our seniors are not selecting high school courses, but they should be finalizing their post secondary educational choices. Seniors need to meet with their counselors making sure they have their credits to graduate, apply for scholarships and order their cap and gown for commencement. Scholarship information can be found on the MCHS web site under Guidance. Applications for the Michigan City Promise Scholarship can be obtained in the guidance department or by stopping by City Hall at 100 E. Michigan Blvd. from 8:30 am to 4:30pm Monday – Friday.

This semester Grade 10 students will experience their Graduation Qualifying Exam, (GQE) Grade 10 ISTEP+ in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. There are two testing sessions. Part 1 testing window is February 27th – March 10th and Part 2 window is April 17th – May 5th. Students MUST PASS the GQE in both areas to graduate and receive a diploma. Students are actively learning what they need to know and be able to do to pass the ISTEP+. Soon, Grade 10 parents will receive more information regarding the Grade 10 ISTEP+. Additionally, access to practice items will be available to students and parents via web based learning tools that are currently being used in the classrooms.

I encourage you and your student to be engaged in the learning process. I hope you will continue to check Parent Access, communicate with guidance counselors and teachers, and do what is needed to insure your student graduates College and Career ready!
