Michigan City High School Wolves Wire April 2014

MC Wolves logoFrom the Desk of the Principal...

Hello my fellow Wolves,

It took some time and several snow days, but spring has finally arrived to Michigan City, just in time for break. Due to this crazy winter, please note that Good Friday, April 18th, will be a snow make up day for Michigan City Area Schools. Thank you Polar Vortex.

Now that the final lap of the race, the fourth grading period, has arrived, it is important that we remain focused and finish the year strong. In order to finish strong, our students need to be here. I have sent home many messages this year to emphasize the importance of attendance as it is an essential skill in being college and career ready. When looking at top performing schools around the state or top performing students in our building, those who have demonstrated excellent attendance have excelled academically. Currently, Michigan City High School’s attendance rate is 94.8 percent. The benchmark for good attendance for a student or a school in the state of Indiana is 95 percent. In the past seven school years, the highest average attendance rate recorded for Michigan City High School took place last year, 94.6 percent. With your support and encouragement, we expect to finish the year at 95 percent or better. We need your support in helping our students be here, so that they can get there.

On behalf of the Michigan City High School faculty and staff, we would like to thank the many parents and students who supported our effort in earning accreditation through AdvancED. The process as described by AdvancED , asks institutions and systems to critically evaluate their vision, strategies, priorities, leadership, and programs and resources. The process of earning and maintaining accreditation provides institutions and educational systems with clear and compelling direction for implementing changes to move toward excellence. You can go to the following link: http:// www.advanc-ed.org/webfm_send/288, to learn more information of the steps and standards that must be met in order to received accreditation through AdvancED. Additionally, you can go to the high school’s website and review our accreditation report and exit report submitted by the AdvancED Exit Review Team.

Through our accreditation, Michigan City High School is “READY” to ensure all of our students’ graduate college and career ready. As always, you can follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, or call to remain informed of the many things taking place at Michigan City High School. Go Wolves!

Counselors’ Corner

Hard to believe we are in the final quarter of the 2013/2014 school year. Though the end is in sight there is still much work to be done. Fourth quarter plays a big role in your 2nd semester grade so don’t let your brains go on summer break early.

May S.A.T. signup deadline is Friday, April 4th.

Freshman 21st Century Scholars, please remember that you must participate in an extracurricular or service activity during your 9th grade year. After participating in your selected activity(ies), log in to your ScholarTrack account at Scholars.IN.gov/scholartrack to answer a few questions that confirm you’ve completed this requirement.

Need an idea for a service activity or just want to help beautify our town? The LaPorte County Community Cleanup Day scheduled in conjunction with the annual nationwide GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP is on Saturday, May 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Join fellow high school students as we clean up our high school campus and the surrounding area. Students, parents, family and friends are all welcome to join us as we meet in the north parking lot in front of the school. Keep America Beautiful and area businesses are pitching in to provide trash bags, bottled water, snacks and more for volunteers during the cleanup. After the cleanup all volunteers are invited to a thank you lunch in Michigan City. You just need to provide your own gloves and appropriate clothing for the weather. Though an RSVP is not required it is helpful in knowing how much water and snacks we will need. To RSVP stop in the Guidance Office where there will be a sign-up sheet or leave a message for Judy Kovalcik at 873-2044 x4579. You can also email her at jkovalcik@mcas.k12.in.us. We look forward to seeing you all there!
