Michigan City High School MJROTC Participates in 2014 Toys for Tots

2014-toys-for-tots-01The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) assisted the local chapter of the Marine Corps League (Michiana Marines) in the collection of toys for underprivileged children as part of the Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots is a program started by Marine Corps Reservists in Los Angeles after World War II, and it quickly spread nationally. Today, all Marine Corps Reserve units have a Toys for Tots program, which they coordinate with local businesses and charitable organizations.

“I think this is what Christmas is all about,” said the Cadet Commanding Officer, Cadet Captain Cody Joseph. “It really makes you feel good inside, knowing you helped make Christmas brighter for a young girl or boy who is having a rough time.”

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, commented on the good heartedness of the cadets. “Many of these cadets come from tough situations themselves, but they are willing to help others ahead of themselves.”

Major Tom McGrath, the Senior Marine Instructor, agreed with the unselfishness of the cadets. “These cadets will also be doing bell ringing and food gathering for the Salvation Army, as well as supporting our elementary schools with their Christmas programs. This is in addition to our support of One City, One Sound (the school district’s Christmas concert).”

The toys will be distributed to needy families through local charitable organizations.
