Michigan City High School MCJROTC Honors USMC in 2015

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) honored the United States Marine Corps by conducting a military ball to celebrate the 240th birthday of the Corps. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation and cutting of the birthday cake. The second and third pieces are given to the oldest and youngest cadets after the first piece was given to the guest of honor. This symbolizes the passing of the tradition of excellence that has been the hallmark of the Marine Corps throughout its existence. This tradition was reinforced by the reading of the Commandant of the Marine Corps' Message to the entire Marine Corps.

The guest of honor was Mr. James Strzelecki, owner and Chief Executive Officer of St. Andrews Products in Michigan City. Mr. Strzelecki attributed his success in business in part to the discipline he learned while serving in the U. S. Army. “I probably hated every minute of basic training and advanced infantry training,” he said in his remarks “But, as I look back, it is probably one of the best things I have ever done. It taught me discipline, and the will to persevere.” Mr. Strzelecki also related conversations that he has had with his partner in charitable organizations and friend, legendary former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz. “With all of the accolades Lou earned as a football coach, he says one of his greatest accomplishments was serving as a U.S. Army lieutenant.” Mr. Strzelecki complimented the cadets for their hard work and determination to become positive contributors to our community and nation. “So many of our youth are doing unproductive activities. I commend you for the effort you put into improving your school and ultimately our country, and I encourage you to continue your admirable performance, “he concluded.

After participating in seven different ceremonies to honor veterans this past week and concluding the week with the military ball, the cadets will be preparing for hosting a military skills competition at MCHS on Saturday, November 21st. 10 schools from Northwest Indiana and Illinois will compete in marksmanship, physical fitness, academics and military drill. The meet will run from 8:30 am to approximately 3:30 pm, is open to the public, and is sponsored by the local chapter of the Marine Corps League. Admission is free.
