2014-MCHS-ROTC-Medal-of-Honor-01The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) participated in the dedication of the Daniel Bruce Memorial Monument at Washington Park on the evening of May 20th. Bruce, born and raised in Michigan City, earned the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for bravery in combat, as a Marine serving in the Vietnam War. The ceremony was also the first event for the Guardian Riders and the Wall Gang veteran motorcycle clubs as they drive to Washington, D.C., for the Memorial Day ceremonies.

The cadets provided a Color Guard, Flag Raising Detail, and “side buoys” on the Washington Park Bridge as the Guardian Riders and Wall Gang entered and exited the park. The MCHS choir sang the National Anthem. Guest speakers for the event included State Senator Jim Arnold and Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly could not attend, but did send a representative to read a letter. Additionally, most of the Michigan City veteran groups either attended or participated in the ceremony.

“One of the most endearing qualities that Americans hold is that we never forget those who protect our freedom, particularly those who gave their lives in the service of our nation,” said Major Tom McGrath, Senior Marine Instructor of the MCHS MCJROTC. “It is important that our cadets know this and always continue this tradition.”

The MCJROTC will participate in five events over the Memorial Day weekend, to include the Michigan City parade and ceremony at the Greenwood Cemetery on Memorial Day.
