Michigan City Firefighters Receive Life Saving Awards in 2015

MC-Fire-Life-Saving-Awards-2015On July 6th, 2015 at the recent Fire Merit Commission meeting Chief Novak of the Michigan City Fire Department recognized the following individuals, Captain Robert Steinborn, Driver Operator Barrett Taylor, Firefighter Shannon Borders and Firefighter Brock Kohler for their Life Saving efforts of a female victim trapped in a structure fire. It is because of their efforts, without hesitation, that they were able to sustain life and are being awarded the “Michigan City Fire Department Life Saving Award”. Chief Novak also recognized LaPorte County EMS Paramedic Wayne Vanbevern and EMT Grant Hensley with the “Fire Chief’s special recognition award”.

On June 1st, 2015 the Michigan City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire, upon arrival Captain Robert Steinborn, Driver Operator Barrett Taylor, Firefighter Shannon Borders and Firefighter Brock Kohler were met with fire conditions. Captain Steinborn led his crew to the rear of the structure and forced entry and found a female victim lying on the floor. Fire personnel immediately removed the victim and transferred care to LaPorte County EMS. LaPorte County EMS Paramedic Wayne Vanbevern and EMT Grant Hunsley assumed care of the victim. The victim was then flown to an advanced care provider in Fort Wayne, IN. Due to the Swift actions taken by Fire and EMS personnel the victim is now down-graded and rehabbing in a local facility.
