Michigan City Area Schools Students Win Awards at Regional Science Fair, Two Qualify for State in 2016

Two of the students, MCHS junior Nicole Pomeroy ("Electromagnets vs Neodymium Magnets") and Barker Middle School 7th grader Grant Wyness ("Ice, Ice Baby"), have been invited to compete at the state level on Saturday, April 2 at the Hoosier State Science and Engineering Fair at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Congratulations to:

  • Honorable Mentions, Junior Division Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computers: Barker Middle School 8th graders, Adam Howard and John Thatcher (won cash prize, a medal, and certificate)
  • 3rd Place, Junior Division Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computers: Barker Middle School 8th grader, Megan Steinhiser (won cash prize, a medal, and certificate)
  • 1st Place, Junior Division Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computers: Barker Middle School 7th grader, Grant Wyness (won cash prize, a medal, certificate, and invitation to compete at the State Level)
  • 2nd Place, Senior Division Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computers: MCHS 11th grader, Nicole Pomeroy (a former Barker student, pictured at left) (won cash prize, medal, certificate, and invitation to compete at the State Level---this will be Nicole’s 6th year competing at the state level!).

  • Club Educate Award for enthusiasm in STEM Research (cash award and certificate)
  • Mu Alpha Theta Award for project demonstrating the most challenging, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem involving modern mathematics in the senior division (cash award and certificate)
  • US Navy/US Marine Corp Naval Science Award for outstanding project (cash award, medal, and certificate)

The 63rd annual Northwestern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair was sponsored by Valparaiso University and Arcelor Mittal. Students from Porter, LaPorte, Starke, Jasper, Newton, and Pulaski counties competed in this Regional fair as individuals or in teams. The Fair takes place each year in March and is a one-day event complete with lunch for all participants and an awards ceremony.

The top senior division (high school) winners, the senior division team project winner, and the top junior division (middle school) winners receive invitations to compete in the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair taking place on April 2, 2016 at IUPUI in Indianapolis sponsored by the Science Education Foundation of Indiana (SEFI).
