Michigan City Area Schools Music Students Earn Gold, Silver at Contest

MCAS-Music-Students-Earn-Gold-Silver-at-Contest-01Vocalists from Michigan City High School, Barker Middle School, Krueger Middle School, and Pine Elementary School took part in the Indiana State School Music Association’s District Solo and Ensemble contest on February 4 at Kankakee Valley Middle School.

Congratulations to the following students, who earned top ratings at the contest.

Michigan City High School: Heading to State
Soloists Ashlee Orman and Myshalya Thompson each received Silver ratings in their divisions at the February 4 ISSMA contest.

Soloists Hayley Catchings, McKenna Bluhm, Jenna Dawson, Lauren Werner, Felicia Skelton, and Neva Panayi, each received Gold ratings in their divisions and will advance to the State competition at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis on February 18.

Four ensembles from MCHS also performed at the District Contest. All four received gold ratings, and will travel to the State ISSMA contest in Indianapolis. They include:

  • Jasmine Williams, Alexius Thompson, and Samarah Williams, who received a Gold rating for their piece “The Poet Sings.”
  • Amanda Sparks, Adnie Wilson and McKenna Bluhm, who received a gold rating for their piece “Music When Soft Voices Die.”
  • Jenna Dawson, Bailee Laux and Jasmine Williams, who received a gold rating for their piece “Deo Gratias.”
  • Brensley Gambill, Autumn Wilson, Rachel McLaughlin, Amanda Sparks, Brittney Adams, Bria Thomas, Adnie Wilson, Bailee Laux and Lexi Zimmerle, who received a Gold rating for their piece “He’s Gone Away.”

Nine Barker students competed at the ISSMA contest, all singing solos and several singing together in a small ensemble. All vocalists from Barker received gold ratings in their divisions.

Gold-medal soloists include: Julia Ringstad, Isabelle Eaton, Madison Wittenburg, Jasmine Berndt, Jamya Gill, Delaina Adams, Gweyth Sardon, Jessica Wilhelm, and Dyana Williams

The gold-medal winning ensemble included Julia Ringstad, Delaina Adams, Gwenyth Sardon, Dyana Adams, Jasmine Berndt, and Isabelle Eaton.

Five soloists and two ensembles from Krueger Middle School also received high marks at the ISSMA contest.

Winning solo medals were: Erica Knudsen (gold), Natori Troutman (gold), Taydius Heard (gold), Athena Krueger (gold), and Michael Lakin (silver).

Krueger’s Advanced Girls Chorus ensemble received a gold rating. Members included: Emily Caddo, Dajiunna Corley, Summyia Garrett, Thalia Klosinski, Erica Knudsen, Marissa Mantel, Morgan Nevills, Caitlyn West, Alissa Woolum, Erica Green, Antoinette Sanders, Shiann Smith, Kiasia Tillman, and Linda Will.

The school’s Mixed Small Ensemble also received gold. Members included: Diasha Smith, Natori Troutman, Athena Krueger, Erica Knudsen, Michael Lakin, and Taydius Heard.

Pine, Michigan City Area Schools’ magnet school for the visual and performing arts, was the only elementary school in the region with students competing at ISSMA. The fourth through sixth graders below received silver and gold medals for their solos.
