MCHS MCJROTC Defeats Portage in Military Skills Competition

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) Drill Team defeated Portage High School MCJROTC in a head-to-head military skills competition on Saturday, October 28th, at Portage. The Wolves won 5 of the 9 events that comprised the event. Those events were Color Guard, Marksmanship, Stretcher Carry, Buddy Carry, and the Tug-of-War. Portage took the Armed Platoon, the One Mile Backpack Run, Push-Ups and Crunches.

“This was a good way to start our competition season,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath. “It was low key, but provided that game-day mentality that we will need going into our multi-school competitions in the near future.

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, also was positive about the cadets’ performance but added a note of caution for future competitions. “We did well here today, but the cadets know that we will have to up our game to be successful in upcoming meets.”

MCHS will host their military skills competition on Saturday, November 18th. 10 schools from Ft. Wayne, Northwest Indiana, and the Chicago Metropolitan area will participate. After the Thanksgiving Break, MCHS will go to Chicago for the University of Illinois-Chicago Meet on December 2. The following Saturday, December 9th, MCHS will travel to West Lafayette to compete in the Purdue University competition.
