Lake Hills and Pine Elementary Schools, two Michigan City Area Schools elementary buildings that serve students from across the region as Magnet Schools, are now accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year.
Like all MCAS elementary schools, the Magnet Schools maintain a primary focus on core academic subjects, including language arts, mathematics, and science. But they are also designed to draw students to them – like a ‘magnet’ – because of a themed approach to the curriculum and programs.
Lake Hills Elementary School (201 Ferguson Road) is a “STEM” Magnet School – centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Pine Elementary School (1660 County Line Road) is a Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts.
Both schools retain their current neighborhood boundaries, serving K-5 students through the Magnet programs. In addition, each school will accept approximately 30 students in Kindergarten from other attendance areas across the MCAS district. The schools will fill open slots in the upper grades, as well.
MCAS also encourages families from outside the school district and from private or charter schools to explore this option. “Many children may have an interest in the arts or a natural curiosity about their world, and Lake Hills and Pine truly engages them,” says MCAS Superintendent Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins. “These specialized programs are providing many families in our community with additional choices for their children’s education.”
Magnet School applications for children entering grades K-5 next year are due by 4:00 p.m. on April 19, 2013. (Students who live within the neighborhood boundaries for Lake Hills and Pine – and those who currently attend as magnet school students – do not need to apply.) A random lottery will be used to determine placements.
