Marquette Tops De La Salle in Double OT Thriller

marquette-boys-basketball-2013-photoThe Marquette Catholic High School boys basketball team returned to action on Saturday evening and won a thrilling contest, defeating De La Salle Institute (Ill.) in overtime.

The Blazers outplayed the Meteors until late in the fourth quarter when De La Salle went on a run and took a three-point lead. With under ten seconds left to go in the game, junior Braxton Miller weaved through traffic and was able to get a shot off as time expired to send the contest into overtime.

The extra session was closely contested with multiple lead changes. With the Blazers holding a two-point lead and possession with nine seconds left to go in the game it looked like the Blazers were going to be able to run out the clock. But a steal by the Meteors gave them an opportunity to force double overtime. In the second overtime, despite multiple shots underneath the basket, the Meteors were unable to get a basket to fall and when the buzzer sounded the Blazers had won 66-64. The team returns to action on Friday, January 3 when they host South Bend St. Joseph.

JV tipoff is set for 5 p.m., with Varsity to follow at 6:30.
