Marquette Catholic High School Students Selected for Hoosier Boys and Hoosier Girls State 2014

hoosier-boys-and-girls-stateHoosier Girls State is a program designed to educate young women of Indiana in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It is a week of living and learning the political system of Indiana through a mythical City, County and State.

Qualifications for HGS, includes that a Delegate shall be interested in government, have leadership abilities, be honest and possess good character. She shall show proper respect to the U. S. Flag and have a love for God and Country.

Citizenship, not politics, is emphasized at Girls State, and competition for elective office is the means to an end, not the goal.

This year’s Hoosier Girls State is being held at Trine University from June 22nd until June 28th.

The Marquette Catholic High School students chosen for Hoosier Girls State are Margaret Cannon, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Cannon; Emily Johnston, the daughter of Mr. Curtis Johnston and Mrs. Amy Johnston; Emma Wangstrom, the daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Neil Wangstrom; Emily Murray, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Murray and Abigail Schmidt, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Schmidt.

The mission of our program is to provide young men an opportunity to learn how politics impact our daily lives. From the very afternoon delegates arrive until the time they go home they will experience, first-hand, how Indiana’s government process works by actively participating in a simulated government setup. By the time they leave, they will know more about our state government than 90% of their fellow Hoosiers.

This is not your normal classroom study session. They will have an opportunity to run for offices of their choice from the local up to state level positions. To win an office delegates will have to interact with over 600 peers and earn their votes, compromise and negotiate to get bills passed, and follow laws and procedures set up by their own establishment. Just like in real life.

The Marquette Catholic High School students chosen for Hoosier Boys State are Dominic Vernon, the son of Mrs. Mary Vernon; Elliott Sass, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Sass and David Dobben, the son of Dr. & Mrs. Richard Dobben.

This year’s Hoosier Boys State is being held at Trine University from June 15th until June 21st.

Marquette Catholic High School would like to thank Tri-Kappa Sorority, the Skwiat Legion Auxiliary, the Fish Lake Region Post and Mr. Richard Schaefer for sponsoring their students’ experience.
