Lubeznik Center for the Arts will feature the Indiana premier of the documentary film Band of Sisters on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm (central time). Mary Fishman, director/producer of the film and a resident of Long Beach, will be on hand to discuss the film.
Band of Sisters focuses on the life experiences and current-day stories of more than a dozen nuns. Many of them have been central agents in the great social movements of our time. The sisters belong to different congregations from across the United States. From sheltered “daughters of the church” once swathed in medieval dress to activists on the front lines of causes for social justice, Band of Sisters follows the journey of these religious women in their work for civil rights, immigration reform, and a host of other causes. Becoming increasingly relevant and visible in aid of the poor and disenfranchised, the sisters now increasingly find themselves on a collision course with the conservative elements in their own church.
While this film marks Fishman's debut as a film maker, she has assembled a team of distinguished, award-winning professionals including Bernadine Colish, editor of several award-winning documentaries; Miriam Cutler, Emmy-nominated composer; Ines Sommer, PBS documentary cinematographer; and Emmy-award winning cinematographer, Bill Glader. The film premiered at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago to rave reviews and several sold-out audiences.
"In addition to our visual art exhibitions at Lubeznik Center, we seek out opportunities to bring innovative films and presentations of other art forms to the Northwest Indiana region. This film is timely and thought-provoking. Because of this, Band of Sisters is a production Lubeznik Center for the Arts wants to bring to our audience," said Carolyn Saxton, Executive Director.
Tickets for Band of Sisters are $5 per person or $4 for LCA members and may be purchased at Lubeznik Center for the Arts or online at www.lubeznikcenter.org/Special_Events/band-of-sisters-2012.html. For more information on the film visit www.bandofsistersmovie.com.
