The La Porte High School Girls’ Track 2013 season is winding down, but the team is just heating up. This young team is excited about the progress that has been made and is looking to try their hand in sectionals.
“We are a very young team and we are going up against a lot of wonderful runners, jumpers, and throwers in our conference. We are getting better and it is certainly an improvement from last year,” explained Head Coach Andy Doty.
This is Doty’s second year coaching the girls’ team, the year before he was an assistant coach for the boys’ team. He wholeheartedly enjoys his position and has been nothing short of impressed with the 2013 team.
“They work equally as hard as they boys. They definitely put out their effort,” said Doty.
The team is young, comprised mainly of freshman and sophomores, but full of a positive spirit that keeps them working. The team has made drastic improvements from the start of the season and is truly starting to compete in the conference. Although, competing against older and more experienced athletes may be intimidating, Doty encourages the girls to consider everything a learning experience. Fortunately, Doty suggests that the team’s strength is courage.
“Every week we are lining up against girls who have either made it to state the year before. That in itself is a challenge. To overcome the nervousness of being beside a state qualifier, especially at a younger age, takes courage,” commented Doty.
The team is hoping to use that courage to conquer teams in the upcoming sectional. All the training in the off season, workouts, and track meets lead up to the end of season rush to state.
“My main goal is to see how many girls we can get to state. That is our number one priority and focus,” closed Doty.
