LPHS French Club Gathers for Breakfast Prior to Spring Break

There are a lot of ways to start a day on the right note. However, one could not argue that sipping on a French cappuccino with a croissant in hand certainly is high on the list. On Thursday, March 28, members of the La Porte French Club gathered in Joyce Koselke’s French room bright and early to enjoy a French breakfast.

The breakfasts are held every few months in celebration of French culture and upcoming holidays. This particular breakfast was the send-off for spring break and a celebration of Easter.

“The food is tres delicious,” club sponsor Koselke said. “We have been doing these breakfasts for roughly 13 years. We started them to enjoy the French food and have fun.”

French club members filtered in and out the room throughout the morning for casual French chat and a trip down the yummy French buffet. The table was laden with all sorts of delicacies. Petite fours, croissants, Nutella, fresh-baked mini quiche, chocolate éclairs, crème puffs, chocolate pirouettes, apple juice, hot chocolate and French coffee disappeared quickly as the hungry students gathered.

“I love the food so much," member Nicole Griffin said. “My favorite is eating the croissants smothered with Nutella.”

The food is covered by dues the members pay at the beginning of the year, but prepared by Koselke.

“I go and buy most of the food from Gordon’s Food Service,” Koselke said. “Then, all I have to do is wake up early and bake the mini quiche.”

French club members on cabinet also provide a few of the food items and help organize the event. Food is just one part of the French breakfast equation. Students lounge around and chat, in French of course, and jam to delightful French music.

“The whole atmosphere is wonderful. To wake up the day before Spring Break and get to enjoy a delicious breakfast with great people is wonderful. I am glad I chose to study French because the culture definitely has fabulous foods,” member Maria Sobecki said.

Fortunately, this is not the last breakfast of the year. Come May, the final breakfast will be held in honor of summer and the departing seniors.
