LPHS Baseball Team Looking for Bounce Back Season

LPHS-Baseball-Collage-1La Porte Slicer Baseball is synonymous with success. The team has a long-standing rich history and is a pinnacle in La Porte athletics and pride. The La Porte Slicers are looking to come out of the gates hard and reestablish their reputation after last year’s struggles. The 2012 Slicer season ended with an uncharacteristic record of 12-19. This broke the streak of 20 win seasons the team had kept up for over 40 years.

But, 2013 is a new year and a new team that is looking to put the Slicer name back where it belongs. The team will work to solidify the defense and most importantly up the ante offensively.

“We need to come around and hit the baseball which we didn’t do last year. They have been working very hard in the cages. We are taking this pre-season and early season here to work especially hard,” assistant coach Steve Santana said.

Improvement is key-along with redemption. The teammates are working especially hard to redeem themselves from last season and take back some wins.

“We want to put Slicer baseball back where it should be,” senior returner Erik Nelson said.

Thus far, the team’s hard work has been evident, and the droves of dedicated fans who turnout at iconic Schreiber Field each game will have something to cheer for. On April 3, the Slicers proved their tenacity with a 7-0 win over South Bend John Adams.

“From where we are at right now to where we need to be we have to improve,” head coach Scott Upp said. “I am looking forward to that process and seeing that it happens.”
