Local Agencies Awarded Emergency Food and Shelter Grants

united-way-laporte-countyEight local agencies that assist area residents with food, rent and utilities will receive federal grants totaling more than $53,500.

The La Porte County FEMA Board, in partnership with United Way of LaPorte County, has announced the following recipients of 2014 Emergency Food and Shelter Grant Awards:

Salvation Army, Michigan City $13,354 food, shelter, utilities
Salvation Army, La Porte $17,248 food, rent, utilities
United Food Pantry, Hanna $2,244 food
North Central Community Action $7,000 rent
Catholic Charities $7,000 rent
Westville Food Pantry $2,244 food
Stepping Stone Shelter $2,244 food
Citizens Concerned for Homeless $2,244 food

The federal funds were awarded through a program created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States by providing food and shelter.

United Way of LaPorte County is honored to help distribute these much needed federal dollars to local community agencies,” said Dave Sisk, Untied Way Community Investment Manager.

Sisk encourages those needing assistance with food, rent, utilities and other services to dial 2-1-1 and speak to an information and referral specialist at United Way’s Call Center, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
