Every year is different and 2020 has really pushed that envelope. It has been a challenge in so many senses of the word. The pandemic has had far-reaching impacts throughout the world and here in La Porte it has been especially challenging. That said, with challenges come opportunities and the resiliency of our community means we have taken advantage of each and every one of those opportunities.
First and foremost, La Porte has learned new ways to do business. Social distancing has meant changes in how citizens engage with their government. Public meetings are broadcast in video format on social media platforms, residents are provided video engagement opportunities to ask questions and gain information, and now city bills can be paid online or utilizing the City's new drive-up service. These are all new developments and although they came about due to the pandemic, they will undoubtedly stay because they are more efficient and effective ways to do business.
Often, we are asked, "With all that is going on in the world, is La Porte continuing to grow?" The answer is an unequivocal yes! In fact, La Porte has grown at a record pace. Numerous new projects have occurred this year with some being game changers.
Without a doubt "The Banks" development, built by Flaherty & Collins is the headliner project this year. Soon 200 high-end apartment units will grace the NewPorte Landing development in the City. These apartments are desperately needed, and we regularly hear how excited our community is for these housing units to be available.
Rural King is under construction and plans to open by March of 2021. The former Maple Lane Mall is undergoing a total redevelopment and construction is already underway on the new and improved parking lot.
Infinite Development has begun construction on a massive mixed-use project along East Shore Parkway. The project brings new professional office space to the community as well as townhomes along Fish Trap Lake and paired ranches adjacent to McClung Road.
All corners of the City are experiencing this growth, with Popeyes Chicken under construction on the East Side of the City as well. Catalyst HRE has begun construction on their 57,000 sq. ft. medical office building connected to the new Northwest Health hospital. These are just a few of the projects currently underway in the City of La Porte.
There is no doubt this has been a challenging year, but La Porte continues to stand tall and has embraced both the challenges and opportunities. We look forward to an even better 2021.
