Thirty-eight teams, or about 152 golfers, gathered to support the fundraiser held at Beechwood Golf Course in La Porte. Each year the event has grown in the number of individuals and businesses who support LEAP. This year was a record number of teams into two flights.

Funding from the event goes back to the members by promoting local businesses and enhancing economic development.

“The money helps to further our cause in trying to drive business to our businesses within our community and to make it the best place to live and work,” said LEAP President Mike Riehle. “The weather has worked out perfect, and it’s been a great day.”

The event included prizes, a raffle, contests, and lunch catered by two food trucks. The competitions included a hole-in-one, the longest drive, and the best putter.

LEAP Executive Director Bert Cook applauded Riehle, Marketing and Communications Director Lindsay Jongkind, and Workforce Development Coordinator Erik Nelson for the event's success.

“This is a huge part of our year from a financial standpoint but also from the connections that are created and maintained out here,” Cook said. “The bigger piece of the outing is the connections and making sure we are staying in touch with all of our businesses and our community members. We hope they recognize that we appreciate everything that they do for LaPorte.”

Players were greeted on the 15th hole by the face of La Porte, Mayor Tom Dermody, as part of the contests. Those who hit the shot closest to his face were eligible to win a prize for being the worst golfer. LEAP works closely with the City of La Porte and the mayor’s office in terms of economic development. Dermody praised LEAP for being a leader of local development and growth.

“You take Bert Cook, Mike Riehle, Lindsay Jongkind, and Erik Nelson, with each of those individuals focused on certain areas of LaPorte, that’s going to make it better,” Dermody said. “Thanks to Bert’s leadership, we are headed to strongly compete with the other communities. I’m excited for what the next year is going to bring.”

Dermody said the number of teams playing is a clear indication of the strong connections LEAP is making.
