Law Day Celebration to be Held May 2, 2014 in LaPorte Superior Court No. 1

2014-law-dayIn celebration of Law Day this year, the LaPorte County Bar Association will sponsor a public program on Friday, May 2, 2014 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the LaPorte Superior Courthouse, Superior Court No. 1, 300 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana 46360. The program is titled “Why Every Vote Matters” and will address the significance of our right to vote in in the United States.

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day, a day when the people of the United States should engage in appropriate ceremonies and activities to “remember with pride and vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice and equality under law.” Proclamation 3221, 3 CFR 143 (1958). Every President since Dwight D. Eisenhower has issued an annual Law Day Proclamation.

Law Day, U.S.A. has been recognized as a “special day of celebration by the people of the United States: (1) in appreciation of their liberties and the reaffirmation of their loyalty to the United States and of their rededication to the ideals of equality and justice under law and their relations to each other and with other countries; and (2) for the cultivation of the respect for law that is so vital to the democratic way of life.” 36 USC § 113(b)(1)&(2).

This year’s Law Day celebration will include presentations by Senior Judge Steven King and high school students about their perspectives on voting. Additionally, the LaPorte County Bar Association will present the Liberty Bell Award to a deserving citizen who has fostered public understanding of law and its role in our community.

The LaPorte County Bar Association encourages you to join them for this year’s Law Day celebration in keeping with the spirit of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Proclamation that was issued over fifty years ago.
