La Porte Winterfest Promises A Good Time -With or Without Snow

La-Porte-ParksThe month of January is full of neat things to do in La Porte. One of the highlights is Winterfest. It’s an event put on by the La Porte Parks and Recreation Department and this year it lasts from January 18-27. So you get a week’s worth or fun events, plus a few bonus days!

Here’s what to expect for Winterfest activities and events:

Friday January 18 -Zumba Fundraiser presented by IU La Porte Health and the La Porte County Family YMCA from 5:15 to 7:15 at the Civic Center. Proceeds go to fighting cervical cancer.

Sunday January 20- Pancake breakfast sponsored by the Kiwanis Club from 7:30am to 12:30pm at the Armory.

Friday January 25 - Ice sculpture demonstrations presented by Downtown La Porte and local businesses from 4pm to 7pm throughout La Porte’s downtown area.

Saturday January 26- Ice Fishing Derby at Cummings Lodge in La Porte from 6am to 4pm. Sponsored by the La Porte Rotary Club.

Saturday January 26 -Family ceramics class at the Civic Center from 9am to 12pm. Pre-registration is required. Call 219-326-9600 for more information.

Saturday January 26 Snowball Softball Co-ed Tournament at 9am at the Lions Field. It’s a double-elimination tournament and it’s limited to the first eight teams that register. Entry fee is $165 and must be turned in to the park office by Thursday, January 19 at 4pm. Forms can also be printed from www.quickscores.com/laporte. For more information, call 326-9600. Pre-registration is required.

Saturday January 26 Closest to the Pin Contest goes from 11am-1pm at Beechwood Golf Course.

Sunday January 27 Winterfest Fun Run takes place in Soldiers Memorial Park at 12pm. This is a free 3.5mile run that winds through the park. Refreshments served afterward in the lodge.

Sunday January 27 Horse-drawn wagon rides go from 1pm-3pm at Cummings Lodge. Rides go through Soldiers Memorial Park. Afterward, warm up by the fire with hot chocolate.

Sunday January 27 A Valentine Card Making Class takes place at Cummings Lodge from 1:30pm-2:30pm for children ages 4 and up. Pre-registration is required and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 219-326-9600 for more information.
