The La Porte Police Department joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and nearly 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country in this year’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign which ran from August 16, 2013 through September 2, 2013.
The La Porte Police Department reported that three impaired driving arrests were made and 39 citations and 135 warnings were issued during 11 Operation Pull Over grant funded impaired driving patrols in the City of La Porte during the enforcement effort. There were no motorcycle or moped crashes and only one alcohol related crash, which was property damage only, reported during the blitz period. “I want to thank all of our officers for their hard work and dedication to making our roadways safer this Labor Day,” said Captain Tom Heath.
During the 2012 Labor Day holiday period (August 31-September 4), there were 115 alcohol-related crashes in Indiana. During last year’s Labor Day Crackdown, there were 14,655 citations issued, 669 misdemeanor DUIs, and 106 felony DUIs.
Among motorcyclists, in 2012, in Indiana, there were 209 collisions involving an alcohol-impaired motorcycle (includes mopeds) operator, 32 alcohol-impaired motorcycle operator fatalities, and 144 alcohol-impaired motorcycle operator non-fatal injuries.
“Labor Day should be time of celebration and national reflection – not a time where officers have to notify families that they have lost a loved one due to an alcohol-related collision,” Chief Adam Klimczak said.
