Tryouts for the La Porte Park and Recreation Department traveling baseball teams are scheduled for this Sunday and Sunday, March 17, at the La Porte High School Fieldhouse. The 12-year-old team tryouts run from noon-1:15 p.m., followed by the 11-year-old team tryouts from 1:30-2:45 p.m.
Participants in the La Porte Park and Recreation Department Cal Ripken program are eligible to tryout for the travel teams. Participants must play for their age group as determined by their age on or before April 30. Candidates must attend at least one of the sessions to be eligible for selection. There is no fee to tryout for the travel teams. However, if selected, players must pay a $180 fee and participate in fundraising. Teams will participate in 5-6 tournaments from April through June and represent the league in the Cal Ripken State Tournament in July.
All new players registered for the La Porte Park and Recreation Department Cal Ripken Baseball program are requested to attend a skills evaluation. This is not a tryout, as all players are placed on a team, but rather an opportunity for the league coaches to assess their skill level. The skills evaluations are held at the Civic Auditorium and scheduled as follows: Major League (ages 11-12) at 6 p.m. Monday, Minor League (ages 9-10) at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Rookie League (ages 7-8) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
