La Porte High School Students Council and County Home Celebrate the School Year’s End

The La Porte High School Student Council members and the residents of the La Porte County Home formed an unexpected and unique friendship this school year. The Student Council made it a club priority to visit the home once a month.

Club sponsor Erika White explained, “This gathering doubles as the end of the year celebration from Student Council and a chance to spend time the Home’s residents.”

The visits included holiday parties, bingo matches, gift giving, and socialization. The members were able to sit for an hour with the home’s residents and develop special relationships. Many of the residents offered interesting stories about the history of La Porte County that will remain with the students forever.

Council member Kayla Dunbar said, “I have had so much fun talking with the residents. They have some truly great stories. I have learned about the history of this area and appreciate all of the sharing.”

On Thursday, May 16th, the student council visited the County Home for the last time this school year. It was a pot luck dessert celebration complete with pizza donated by the Student Council. The gathering was full of munching and chatting. Although the two groups will not see each other for a few months, the student council plans to continue the visits in the 2013/2014 school year.

White explained, “This is officially Student Council’s project. We will continue making our monthly visits to the home for chats, dinners, bingos, and games.”

The County Home is a local organization that takes in citizens in need and gives them a place to eat and stay. The Home is a wonderful generous facet of the La Porte community.

Through the service project, the student council members have learned about generosity, service, and that they can find friends anywhere. The members will carry many fond memories and lessons from the experience.

Student Council member Meaghan Murphy said, “I have had a lot of fun visiting with the residents. These are memories I will take to college, and I will miss my conversations here.”
