La Porte High School Academic Scholarship Awards Celebrate Night of Giving

Thursday, May 2nd was Academic Scholarship Awards Night for La Porte High School, and was the kind of evening that makes you proud to be a member of the community. Starting at 7:30 pm, students took their place on stage and parents sat eagerly poised in the audience. All were anxious to learn what scholarship each student would receive.

Student Sydney Rusboldt stated, “I felt excited yet nervous at the same time. I was curious as to what I might be awarded.”

Over 60 La Porte organizations, ranging from local businesses and school clubs, stood on the stage and rewarded their scholarship to a deserving student. All together, the organizations awarded over $60,000 in scholarship money to the approximately 75 students present.

Principal Greg Handel started the ceremony by commending the students on their hard work, and wished them luck in their future endeavors. He further noted the unique generosity of the La Porte community. Organizations presenting scholarships included former elementary schools, former middle schools, high school clubs, memorial scholarships, local banks, and resident service organizations.

The scholarships were awarded based on academic achievement, community service, character, and in some cases financial need. Each institution representative took the stage and explained the amount, meaning, and requirements for the at hand scholarship. The recipient then received a certificate, well wishes, and a hearty round of applause.

“I was really surprised about one that I received but very happy. I’m glad to see so many friends receiving money that will help them,” said Rachel Paar.

The giving lasted over an a hour and when it was all said and done, the students and parents left the ceremony anticipating their future.

“I was very grateful and excited that I was chosen out of many to receive these awards,” exclaimed Jordyn Headley.
