La Porte Girl Reserves Provide Food for Thought

Every year, La Porte Girl Reserves takes a moment to commemorate the girls’ success of the year and their support system- their mothers. The annual Girl Reserves Mother-Daughter Dessert took place in the school cafeteria on April 15.

“This is an annual tradition. We celebrate the mothers and daughters. It is about the special relationships,” explained club sponsor Ingrid Voelker.

Members along with their mothers, grandmothers, aunts or other female guardians enjoyed the evening munching on desserts, chatting and listening to a special guest speaker. The guests were treated to delicacies such as Oreo cupcakes, mini cheesecakes and apple cinnamon cookies.

After the guests settled in, the special guest speaker Ellen Kyes began. A former attorney that changed her career path to focus on family and children’s issues, Kyes urged the ladies to choose the path that is best for them. Most importantly, she hit on the Girl Reserves theme of the year- Girls Empowering Girls.

“We all have the ability. We all have the smarts. We all have the strengths to accomplish something great,” Kyes urged.

She wrapped up her presentation with Kristina’s Story, a devastating story of teen suicide. The story was remainder to all, both old and young, to appreciate everyone and stop bullying.

Additionally, members were asked to bring gently worn or new shoes to donate to the school’s month long campaign with Soles 4 Souls. For each pair of shoes brought, a member earned a raffle ticket.

“This is a universal thing we’ve been asked to participate in by the ESC. Every school in the corporation is participating. The shoes go to third world countries and are given to people of all ages,” Voelker explained.

At the end of the evening the raffle prize went to Kayla Dunbar. But the rest of the guests did not leave empty handed. The mothers each received a scented candle from Bath & Body Works.

“It was a wonderful way to bond and spend the evening with my mother over some awesome desserts,” exclaimed member Whitney Neess.
